MONTGOMERY, Ala, May 4—Nine colored persons were in the Montgom- ery County Jail here yesterday for “protection” following an investigation by Federal authorities into reports of peonage in Barbour County, Ala, The colored persons, comprising a family of nine, were brought here at the request of Federal Judge Henry D, Clayton of the middle Alabama district. Federal officers stated that their in- vestigation indicated thaf*a landlord in Barbour County had been holding them in peonage for several years, after pay- ing off obligations they had incurred. The officers refused to reveal the name of the landlord. The case is expected to be considered by the Federal grand jury which con- venes here next Tuesday. More than a dozen are understood to have been summoned to testify. High prices for cocoons have caused many silk mills in Italy to close.
