Peter Rabbit sat under a little hem- lock tree back a short distance from the shore of the pond of Paddy the Beaver. He had given up looking for the nest of Beauty the Wood Duck. As he sat there under the little hem- lock tree there was nothing in particu- lar on his mind. He had a full stom- ach and he was just sitting there hav- ing daydreams. Now out just beyond him was a dead tree. It was a tree that long before had been killed by lightning. It was quite tall and, of G__MOVE IN THERE,” SAID HE UNDER HIS BREATH. course, it was bare. Even the bark had peeled from it. Half way up this tree, on the side facing Peter, was a hole. “1 can remember when Bobby Coon used to live in that tree,” said Peter to | himself. “I- wonder if anybody has lived in it since. I guess not. I have never seen any one around it. goodness! What was that?” Peter abruptly sat up very straight with his ears pointing straight up like My | BY THORNTON W. BURGESS two exclamation marks and his eyes very round and wide. With all his might he stared at that hole half! way up that dead tree. “I saw something move in there,” said he under his breath. “I know I did. It must be | some one is living there right now. | Probably it is one of the owl family. | Still, it may be one of Bobby Coon's children. Or perhaps it is one of the possum family. I shall sit right here until I find out. So Peter once more made himself comfortable and kept his eyes fixed on that hole in the dead tree. Two or three times he thought he saw some- thing moving back in the hollow, but it was so dark in there that he couldn't be quite sure. Peter was patient. Peter can be very, very patient when he wants to be. At last his patience was re- warded. A head was suddenly thrust |out of that hole and just as quickly | drawn back. Peter gasped. Yes, sir, he gasped. | Then he rubMed his eyes. “Did I, or ididn'& I?" he muttered. “I certainly | did. but I couldn’t have. It must have | been my imaginaton. Such a thing icouldn't happen. There it is again. I certainly am seeing things.” It was true that the thing had hap- ‘penefl again. A head had been poked | out of that hole in the tree and just as iquickly withdrawn. Peter was certain that that head was the head of a duck, but whoever heard of ducks in holes in trees high up from the ground! Cer- tainly, he had never heard of such a thing and that was why he couldnt ! make himself believe his own eyes. “That head looked just like the head of Mrs. Wood Duck,” thought Peter. “But of course, it wasn't. I wish I | could climb like Happy Jack Squirrel. I would climb right up that tree and find out who was living in that hole. I must have been thinking so much about those Wood Ducks that when I saw some one else my imagination made me see a Wood Duck. My, I wish I | could find out just who is in there!” i But, though Peter watched for a long, long time, he saw nothing further and finally left to go back to the pond of Paddy the Beaver as puzzled as he had ever been in all his life. Boats are all equipped with power lifters, operated from the marine motors. Fishing is done in water 250 to 400 feet deep and the lobsters are the largest and finest caught anywhere in | American waters. A few of the most industrious Monheganites make from 1 $2.000 to $4.000 in their eight months' season of lobstering, which begins on November 1 and ends June 25, {1t ot ove ki THE CHEERFUL CHERUB Al Becomes a ‘“‘Love Investigator” By Pop MOMAND YES 1REALIZE YOU DONT KNOW MISS.
