OUTLAY OF CHEST INMARGH$7.916.27 Family Relief Needs Increase! During ‘Month, Official Reports Reveal. More money was required for the ma- terial rellef of families under the care of the Associated Charities in March than in any previous month of the so- ciety’s history, and, due to the Com- munity Chest, the funds needed were available, it was disclosed in the official reports submitted to the board of man- agers meeting yesterday afternoon in the Social Service House. Satisfied with the work done and the adequate support of the chest, the man- agers requested Charles C. Glover, jr., chairman, to write a letter of apprecia- tion to the officers of the chest. The reports from the eight district visitors of the soclety showed a total outlay of $7,916.27, of 'hich $4,448.27 was for the emergency relief from the Citizens’ Re- lief Association and $3,468 for regular family allowances for rent and other mecessities, including the Christmas Op- pommiv.y families. During the month there were 765 familles under care, as compared with 536 families during March of last year, an increase of more than 40 per cent. Unemployment, illness, family desertion and imprisonment of wage earner con- tinued to be the leading causes of fam- ily dependency. Deposits in the Penny Provident Savings Fund of the society continued to show a decline, the total for March being $571.17, as against $679.17 the same month of 1928. ‘The board elected as its two repre- sentatives on the Council of Social Agencies for the ensuing year Newbold Noyes, with Franklin Ellis as alternate, and the general secretary, Walter S. Ufford, representing the staff. A letter of sympathy was directed sent to John B. Larner, the treasurer, now conva- lu’cufig after sustaining a broken leg in a fal Members of the board present were Mr. Glover, who presided; Judge Wil- liam H. De Lacy, Franklin H. Ellis, Willlam J.
