McGEEHAN. m:? sport isfaken too seriously it ceases to be a sport. Somehow I have felt that golf, professional or amateur, always would remain & sport, but ‘it seems that they have begun to regard this ancient pastime with great seriousness even in Great Britain, where they always have been twitting us with our efficiency, even in the matter of sport, Training has been ordered for members of the British Ryder Cup team | and strenuous training at that, which always has been foreign to British Tnotions, espegially in regard to golf, which has remained a pure sport even as far as the professionals have been concerned. Mr. Frank H. King, who has trailed many an international golf tournament in England, writes: “Time was when an Englishman took his golf, like his tea and his cricket, casually, but that was before the post-war m? of American amateurs and pros began raiding British trophy rooms. An English golfer who boarded a night train for St. Andrews, arriving in the ancient town of golf just in time for his cold bath and & couple of practice swings on the first tee before entering a championship;-would be accused of handing a title on a platter to America in these days of high-pressure golf. Yet that is the way the famous Freddy Tait went into St. Andrews competitions 30 years ago. “No such leisurely methods for the British Ryder Cup team this year. George Duncan’s men are out to avenge that terrific drubbing at Worcester, Mass., two years ago. Already the players selected to follow the mercurial Scot into the field at Leeds have started practice which will become more and more intense as the dates for the matches approach. “Citing the support American golfers give their international representa- | tives, a fund of $16,000 is being raised by the British P, G. A. to send Duncan’s | men to Scarborough, &' Yorkshire spa, for a week of practice. “They may not like it, but no Briton longer questions the value of training | for golf. The stalwart Archie Compston impressed its value upon his country- men last Spring when he defeated Hagen while the latter was in poor condition. After that Hagen trained hard for a week and. then swept through to the Britislr open championship. “The British generally do not admire American efficlency in sports. Neither do they like to be consistent losers of international golf matches. This year the British Ryder Cup team will fight the greater evil with the lesser.” Of course, professional golfers should take their game seriously, just as professional base ball players, professional fighters or professional bankers should take their business seriously. They should keep themselves at the top of efficiency all of the time, but I hope that this thing does not g0 much farther. Golf always has been & more or less casual matter with both amateurs and professionals. The need of physical and mental preparedness, which involve a certain amount of seriousness, never has been stressed. Golfers never have taken to the training table and the other factors which prepare the player for & serious contest. It has been accepted that a player might start at the nine- teenth hole if he cared to—and at that many a winner of a tournament of | more or less importance has looked in at the nineteenth hole before passing on to the first tee and has won his match. A Matter of Condition. FAR be it from me to pretend to speak expertly on golf, but the most dramatic American victory over British golfers was scored by a man who was de- cidedly out of condition. I refer to the winning of the British amateur at Muir- fleld by Jess Sweetser of Yale. Sweetser was a very sick young man when he entered that tournament. In fact, he was so sick at the opening that he doubted if he could start. But he decided that he would go through with it, having come that far. He entered the tournament in that frame of mind—that he was merely going through the motions—and it is my notion that this frame of mind helped him to win the tournament. He was so sick that he did not care. On the first day he hardly could limp around the course. On the second day he still was dragging his weary feet over it. When he finally tramped the 36 holes on the last day and dragged himself to the club- house a victor, the home-bred who had lifted the British amateur cup, he had to sit down while they were congratulating him, because he wag entirely exhausted. It may be telling tales out of school, but I know that no members of the | ‘Walker Cup team who crossed to England that year trained in accordance with the notions of American efficiency. They took the trip after the manner of sportsmen out to play a game which they would like to win, but which they would be willing to lose gracefully. There was nothing of that overemphasis which is stressed in connection with American intercollegiate foot ball, with that Walker Cup team. In fact, its apparently casual attitude toward what some might consider its great mission might shock those who feel that every international sporting event is something of a crusade, Those young men seemed to have the attitude that a sport was merely a sport, and that attitude may have helped them no little. The Serious Sports. OMEHOW I hate to hear that the British are beginning to regard golf as a serious business. I know that our amateur athletes in some lines train with intense seriousness and are encouraged fo do so by the associa- tion in charge of their particular sports. ‘Witness the case of Mr. Willlam Tilden, 2d, who used to devote more time to keeping up his tennis than any of our professionals do to keeping fit for their sport. Consider the seriousness with which an intercollegiate foot ball game is approached. Yet even here the value of conditioning might be over- emphasized. Two teams from the Pacific Coast last year, stepping from the train after a 3,000-mile ride, beat two of the greatest teams in the East. Understand that I do not think that athletes in the more strenuous sports should let themselves become flabby and out of condition, but there is such a thing as making the matter of training ridiculous. Golf is a game that is not supposed to require any extraordinary physical preparation. It is not a game to be approached with the “I am ready to die for dear old Rutgers spirit.” ‘The cold bath and the few practice swings at the first tee should be sufficlent preparation for the golfer. Train for Everything. F this notion goes much farther it may infect all of our sports. Bridge players will not attempt to play their game until they have worked out for at least 8 week in the gymnasium. No earnest chess player will take up his game until he has spent a few weeks of road work in the mountains and has abandoned smoking for a similar period. The time will come when a fond parent, seeing the young hopeful going out with his marbles. will admonish him: “Willie, you must not attempt to shoot marbles until you have had your two weeks' training.” ACopyright, 1030.) 6 | Brenner & Son. 2519 M st n.w (ummummmmnu OH,T JUST Wil FRIDAY, MARCH 29. 1929.
