SHVETZ APPLAUDED WILDLY FOR SONS Basso Stars at Program of Russian Music Given as Benefit for Church. Mihall Shvetz, great Russian basso, Wwas the star of the “Evening of Russian Music” program presented before a dis- tinguished Washington audience that ' filled the Wardman Park Theater last . concert was given under the au- spices of Grand Duke Alexander of Russia, and a list of local patrons, in- cluding the head representatives of seven foreign countries in Washington, for the benefit of St. Alexander's Rus- sian Orthodox Church of this eity, Rev. Father Viachislav Gindlin, rector. It was 22 years ago when the famous basso first sang the roleof the gypsy chief in the premiere performance of Serge Rachmaninoff’s one-act opera “Aleko” in what is now Petrograd. Last night he sang this role again, for the | first time in Washington. Greeted by Storm of Applause. His interpretation vocally and dramat- feally stood forth. He also sang a group of songs near the close of the pro- gram and aroused a storm of applause and shouts of bravo, having to give sev- eral encores—most of which were com- ical in mood and given with facile artistry. His “Song of the Volga Boatmen” is interesting in its individual coloring and emphasis of phrase. | Mr. Shvetz came to Washington from Philadelphia especially for this per- formance. He is now with the Philadel- gl.'nsh Grand Opera Co. He previously Apgzll’td with the Chicago Grand Mme. Marie Zalipsky, widow of Boris Zalipsky, the famous Russian who sang another leading role in the original “‘Adeko” performance, was in charge of the ;r;‘mgnm and thief accompanist and \ the younger singers last night, Katherine Hertzberg, dramatic soprano, and Yascha Helfetz, baritone, were good.
