THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. ‘C.. A\ 3 SATURDAY, MARCH 23. 1929. BELGIAN MUSICIANS APPEAR IN CONCERT Symphonic Band Is Heard| With Keen Enthusiasm by Audience. The Symphonic Band of the Royal Belgian Guards, Capt. Arthur Prevost, director, which is making its first tour of the United States by special per- mission and under the patronage of King Albert of Belgium, gave its debut performance in Washington at Poli's Theater yesterday afternoon. This was one of the most unusual concerts to which & local audience has ever lis- | tened, because of the remarkable tran® | scriptions of famous organ and orches- tral compositions for band instruments and the splendid performance of such music by this justly called “symphonic band.” The audience, led by the Ambassador | of Great Britain and Lady Isabella | Howard and the Ambassador of Bel Cofifs"fimG; Almost instant relief | e it one swailow of glum and Princess de Ligne, showed | astounding. A colorful feature of | their visit in Washington was the con- | cert given by them back of the \Vhl!(“} House vesterday at noon, when they gave some musical greetings to Pres! dent and Mrs. Hoover while surrounded by the Unijted States service bands, all | three being represented. Instead of requiring both band and orchestral instrument equipment of | these men, as is the case in the Ameri- can service bands, their leader, Capt. | Prevost, has concentrated upon per- | fecting: every possibility in the use of | the band instruments. The first flutist occupies the seat of the first violinist, or concertmeister, and the woodwind section generally is | brought to the foreground with the brasses and tympani most logically ar- ranged in the background and the two bass viola at the right back. The bas- usually held by the violoncelles of a | symphony orchestra and the saxaphenes are placed on_the extreme right in the | foreground. There followed, however, for an au- dience that was obviously reluctant to leave, several more typiral band selec- tions in march tempo, particularly pop- ular being the “March de Napoleon.' The audience stood for the composition which the Belgian leader had especiaily arranged for this tour, which featured | Belgian and American airs, and also for the two national anthems. Capt. Prevost certainly is to be commended {both upon his amazing skill as an a; | ranger of these masterpieces for band and also as a conductor of dominant talent and personality. —=H.F.
