Wall Street Briefs ‘The American Tobacco Co. yesterday reported a record year for 1928, net earnings having totaled $25,066,299, an increase of $1,756,610 over 1927, largely as a result of the great increase in the sale of its principal brand of cigarettes, coincident with the most extensive news- paper advertising campaign ever under- taken in behalf of an American product. Gains Widespread. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 15.—Supplied with seemingly unlimited resources and boundless assurance, speculators for the rise carried the prices of their favorites higher and higher in a tumultuous ses- sion on the Stock Exchange today. The buying did not take in all classes of stocks. Only a few of the rails were included and a good many in- dustrials prominent in the earlier trad- ing sold off toward the end, but the | leaders were not allowed to give way. The turnover approximated 5,500,000 shares. A large part of this was con- eral Motors, Bethlehem Steel, copper and’ certain oil stocks. demonstration in Radio was eas feature. The old stock at 534 was up | 3 points on the day and more than 80 points above where it closed on Mon- | day last. The new stock, near 108, was up 7' points, and almost 18 points above “where it left off on the first day of the weck. Money held at 7 per cent all day. The opening was wild. During the first half hour 121,100 shares changed hands, or at the rate of more than 12,000,000 shares for a full five-hour day. The ticker fell 19 minutes behind, ‘aud the pace was so rapid that even hardened traders expressed doubt as to how long it could last. Industrials Lead Rise. Large gains were made by the lead- ing industrials. The rails had frw, friends. Advance. 2123 2% 3% 1% 4 3% 1 ‘The features in the first hour were Radio, Bethlehem Steel and General Motors. Radio, old and new, both went to new highs, the former selling at 512 | and the latter above 103. The question was asked, not skeptically but inter- estedly, what the pool was going to do | with Radio now that it had reached its objective? Optimistic estimates of Bethlehem Steel earnings coming from well in- formed quarters were responsible for the jump in that stock. Not only was the opening price a new high for the year, but the best since war time. Gen- eral Motors was one of the largest gainers at the start, which was some- thing of a surprise for a stock that has been relatively stable in recent sessions. Along in the second hour Kennecott assumed the leadership, selling above 101 for the first time, equivalent to more than 200 for the old stock. Other copper shares were higher, including Anaconda, Andes, Cerro de Pasco, Chile and Greene Cananea. The rise in the coppers had the justification of another increase in the price of the metal. The export quotation today was 203 cents a pound, up half a cent, and predictions were made of a further advance Satur- day or next week. See Favorable Developments. The Street read into all overnight de- velopments a favorable interpretation. Secretary Mellon’s statement advising the purchase of bonds was declared to- day to mean that the Secretary was of the opinion money rates would not re- main at their present high level. That being the case, the argument ran, there was no obstacle to a fresh advance in stocks. The brokers’ loans showing was held to be proof that the Federal Re- serve was not in control of the situ- ation. This was the deduction from the increase in the supply of funds from corporate and individual investors. Call money renewed at 7 per cent, the rate that had prevailed yesterday. The market was firm at this rate. EARNINGS REPORTED. NEW YORK, March 15 (#).—In the quota of 1928 earnings statements ap- pearing today oil companies showed marked improvement.
