Are Spend- ing $400,000 a Year to 3 Eradicate Them. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (#).—The cattle tick, defying eradication at the hands of State and Federal agencies, has been harbored by the palmetto brush since the days of the Spanish conquest. At the zenith of her power, and eager to dominate the new world, Spain sent colonists to Florida—and with them, cattle. The catle brought the ticks, but nobody got excited about it then. Ticks on a Spanish cow wers as much a part of her anatomy as hoofs and horns. In time the colonists moved weste ward, taking their cattle. After a tims . beef cattle moving into the North from | Texas began dying on the trail. Ticks | were found on the dead ones, and ani- mal specialists concluded the ticks were | to blame. They became definitely as- | soclated with “Texas fever,” and today Florida and the Federal Government to- gether are spending $400,000 a year to drive the insect from the State. The tick is a E"““e that derives its living principally from the blood of cattle. Tests have been made with a 1.000-pound steer which show that in a 12-month riod ticks such 200 pounds of blood from the animal. At no one time in that period did the | steer have more than 50 pounds of blood in its veins, which means that each three months the animal had to Teplenish its entire blood supply to feed the parasites. All Southern States infested with the “Texas fever tick” are making an ef- fort to free themselves. principally by dipping their cattle in vats of chemical solutions and then turning them on tick-free pastures. Freedom from the | tick is expected to give the South & [ profitable beef industry. L S AUCTION SALES, __FUTURE DAYS » ADAM A, WESCHLER & SON, Auctioneers.
