EAST MEETS WEST IN OLD TASHKENT Central Asian City Really Is “Two-in-One” Town, With Modern Addition. “When Tashkent recently shook for several hours, during a Central Asian ecarthquake, native merchants continued to drive bargains in the bazaars and the loungers in the tearooms had some- thing new to talk about,” says a bul- letin from the National Geographic Soclety. “The traveler is reminded of Tash- kent's frequent tremors when he enters the city. Few houses are more than one-story - high, so that earthquake damage is reduced to a minimum, Russian Quarter a Bit of Europe. “Using modern real estate terms, Tashkent might be called a duplex, or semi-detached city,” continues the bul- letin. “The old city—no one seems to know how old—still stands in its dust, while the adjoining Russian town, built since the Russians occupied Tashkent in 1866, presents a modern aspect. “The traveler who makes a long dusty Jjourney from Moscow to Central Asia finds comfortable accommodations in the Russian quarter. Wide streets are lined with elms and poplars and clear streams flow through them. Many of the houses are surrounded by grassy lawns and the parks adorned with beds of blooming flowers. The population of this quarter is largely European, the shop windows display European cloth- ing and the theaters, schools and pub- lic bulldings seem too modern for a Cen- tral Asian city. Blank Walls Line Streets, “But a short tram ride from the Rus- slan quarter affords the ‘atmosphere’ of The traveler literally rides out of the modern into the ancient: from a portion of the western world to & portion of the eastern. Many of the old residential streets aré as brown and dreary as they were centuries ago. Brown dust covers the ground, two brown dry mud walls rise high on each side and brown dust fills the air. The walls form the backs of Tashkent houses and surround large courts. The street sides of the houses are blank, except for doorways at fre- quent intervals. “Now and then the upper limbs of a lofty poplar rising above the inner side d|ery. A nurse told me about Fig Syrup, so I knew what to give him for his colds and his feverish, upset spells. I have used it freely with my babf; and he loves it. It always fixes him up, quick.” In many homes the third and fourth generations are using pure, wholesome California Fig Syrup| because it has never failed t0 do{ments were served. what is expected of it. Nothing so quickly and thoroughly purges a child’s system of the souring waste which keeps him cross, feverish, headachy, bilious, half-sick, with coated tongue, bad breath and no appetite or energy as long as it is allowed to remain in the little stomach and bowels. Fig Syrup gives tone and strength to these organs so they continue to act as Nature intends them to do, and helps build up and strengthen weak, pale and underweight chil- dren. Over four million bottles used a year shows its popularity. The genuine, endorsed by phy- sicians for 50 years, always bears the word “California.” CALIFORNIANA FIG SYRUP LAXATIVE-TONIC for CHILDREN M. | Delegates, and who is a member of the an open gate, or he may glimpse a few poppies peeping over the corner of a housetop. The popies grow wild on the clay roofs of Tashkent. People Are Shrewd Traders. “The bulk of Tashkent’s 320,000 in- habitants are Sarts, a sturdy, tanned people famed for their love of bargain- ing. In the business streets and bazaars the native merchants, presiding over open-front shops, fill the air with sales talk while their hands and arms as- sist, so far as milling throngs permit. Pedestrians talk in many dialects and shrill .voices of venders add to the clamor. Above the din, the harsh voice of the caravan leader warns pedestrians of his approach and, as his dusty, moth- eaten followers. pass, the pedestrians are forced to stoop, jump and sidestep to avoid the freight protruding over the camels’ sides or being trampled under the animals’ feet. Tashkent has a rail- road, but'the caravan has not been dis- placed. Native Costumes Add Color. “The dreary aspect of the residential streets does not apply to the inhabitants of Tashkent. The natives wear a bright- colored skull cap, around which a tur- ban is somtetimes wound, and a loose- fitting coat of many colors. Green tur- bans identify the Mohammedan mul- lahs. Visiting Persians wear hats of karakul lambskin, which resembles the fur muffs once popular among Ameri- can women. “A sizzling sun shines down upon Tashkent, and travelers welcome cool tearooms in preference to the native cook shops. While sipping tea cus- tomers watch the itinerant barbers shave the heads of natives. With a penholderlike insttument and a little ‘water the hair is removed, but the con- tortions of the customers’ faces indicate that the ‘operation’ is a necessity rather than a pleasure.” MONTGOMERY ROAD PROGRAM PRAISED Rock Creek Valley Democratic Club Also Indorses New Rockville Courthouse Plan. Special Dispatch to The Star. ., Md., March 5—~In a resolution adopted at the annual meet- ing at the home of Samuel S. Welsh, near Avery, Saturday night, of the Rock Creek Valley Democratic Club, the proposition that the Legislature now in session authorize an additional bond issue of $150,000 for the purchase of land to enlarge the site of the proposed new Rockville courthouse was favored, and coples of the resolution were or- dered sent to the county’s representa- tives in the State Senate and House of Delegates. “The club also passed a resolution con- gratulating the county commissioners on their “fairness and wisdom” in adopting the 1929-30 road building pro- gram for the county and expressing its thanks and appreciation that the pro- gram includes the construction of shoulders and the back-filling of the 5 miles off the Muncaster's Mill road, from Norbeck to Redland, which thor- oughfare, the resolution pointed out, serves four districts—Rockville, Gaith- ersburg, Olney and Laytonsville. Led by Dr. George L. Edmonds, who represents the county in the House of County Board of Education, there was a general discussion of Montgomery County, its past, present and future, and there seemed to be a general dis- position to give full credit to those hav- ing a part in the county’s remarkable development of the past few years. Rosy pictures were painted of the county’s future development, particular reference being made to possibilities of the Rock Creek Valley section. ‘The club re-elected Francis E. Fraley president; Samuel S. Welsh, vice presi- dent; Walter Pack, secretary, and Mrs. Samuel S. Welsh, treasurer. ‘The meeting was conducted by Pre: dent Traley and was attended by members.
