HATSON NES P N HOOVER RANKS Senator -Hits Caustic Com- ment on President-Elect by Mississippi Senator. BSenator Watson of Indiana took his position in the ranks of Hoover sup- porters in the Senate yesterday after a bit of political play, in which Senator Harrison, Democrat, of Mississippi, forced the Indiana Senator to take the | defensive by an expression of regret for the newspaper men forced to stand in the snow outside the President-elect's| home here. “If it had not been for tHese gentle- men, forced, as they were, to remain outside on the streets shivering and freezing in a foot of snow,” declared Harrison, “they perhaps would not have been able to tell the country that my - good friend from Indiana, Senator Wat- son, the next leader in this body of the majority party, had renewed his friend- lh,l&'!lh the President-elect.” ,"Mhis drew Senator Watson to his feet, and the Indianan was subjected to some good-natured heckling as he took up the cause of Mr. Hoover. He was one of Hoover's outstanding foes in the Re- publican presidential campaign last year. ‘Watson Makes Retort. ‘Watson said he did not know about the newspaper men standing in the show. He took the opportunity to ex- plain that Mr. Hoover had returned to ‘Washington to seek counsel for his new dutifes, and he declared the President- elect was the “best equipped man in his | knowledge” for the presidency. Harrison provoked laughter with a suggestion that Mr. Hoover at least sup- ply the newspaper men with kindling wood to warm themselves as they await outside his residence to watch for news. He recalled that Mr. Hoover had asked $200,000 for enlarging the White House executive office and he presumed this was “to take care of three secreta- ries for whom he has asked.” /Watson told Harrison that after the mext administration comes in it will “make things so’ warm for my friend from Mississippi that there won’t be any mnow for any one to stand in.” This prompted Senator Blaine, Re- blican, Wiisconsin, to ask if Mr. loover was going to “consign the Sen- stor from Mississippi to the lower re- glons.” With a smile Senator Watson replied that “I am reminded that wa- ter always seeks its own level.” Semator Harrison's Rejoinder. Senator Harrison, in referring to the necessity f.r the newspipermen to stand outside the Hoover residence, de- clared that Mr. Hoover “returned to as a real, human character, and lh: impression went out that he would after the press boys and the officeseekers.” ;“He may be a cloistered gentleman,” tinued Harrison, “who thinks the is not interested in what goes on, the country is in Soms terested. e E them want fi? :now wha, tll;: ne: ttorney General N ly the pmhlbmu al % .
