etu for Passing of Winter Season Marked by Good-By Parties In Capital Social Circle Lenten Period Program Includes Many Functions Centering About White House—Leading Events of Week Scheduled. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. ITH many farewell parties going on'and hostesses paying their last social obligations, society is anything but a dead issue during the first days of Lent. It is always lively in the last month or two of an administration, and just now one finds many a touch of sadness in again breaking up what has been a delightful social regime since the President and Mrs. Coolidge came to Wsuhh\gton to live nearly eight years ago. Mrs, Coolidge has dined with the cabinet ladies and they have dined with her and again tomorrow afternoon she will be at home in the White House to a group of officials. President and Mrs. Coolidge will dine with Secretary of Labor . and Mrs. James J. Davis, Tuesday night, their very last cabinet dinner and they will from now on meet their official family and their host of Washington friends rather informally. Most of the members of the cabinet seem bent upon entertaining informally up to the very eve of March 4, and of course there will be an exchange of visits between Mrs. Coolidge and Mrs. Hoover, her successor, who is arriving from a rest in the South. MOVING out and moving in is the order of the day at the White House and all of this has been arranged by Mrs. Coolidge to be accomplished by the time her successor as Mistress of the Mansion takes her place. The inventory of the household goods of the Govern- ment ensconced in the President’s house, a detail that every Mistress insists on, is being carried out. There are many treasures in the old mansion and Uncle Sam is very jealous of them. 'I'HE Vice President-elect and his sister, Mrs. Gann, are constantly on the roll of entertainment and they will have a large family party in their gpartment at the Mayflower for about 10 days beginning about March 1. Mrs. Jerome Colvin of Topeka, Kans., elder sister of Senator Curtis, and at present living in the old Curtis home in the Kansas capital will arrive this week and will remain until some days after the inauguration. Maj. and Mrs. Charles P. George, the latter, Permelia Curtis, will come on Wednesday. But because their children are in school at Fort Sill, their present home, the grandchildren will not come at this time. Mr. and Mrs. Webster Knight of Providence, will probably join their father and relatives on the Sunday before the inauguration and Mr. and Mrs. Harry King Curtis will arrive from Chicago about the same time. Many old friends and neighbors of Senator Curtis from Topeka are coming to the inauguration and will make their headquarters at the Mayflower. ’I'ODAY marks the twenty-third anniversary of the marriage of the Speaker and Mrs. Longworth and they will undoubtedly be kept busy receiving congratulations in some form or other, telegrams and cablegrams coming from Eusope. Tuesday night the Speaker and Mrs. Longworth will be guests at the Congressional Club, the annual event in their honor, and other engagements await them up to the eve of March 4. Thursday, St. Valentine’s day, little Paulina Long- worth celebrated the fourth anniversary of her birth.
