TWO HUGE LIGHTS 10 GUIDE FLYERS Bolling Field Installing 10, 000-Watt Automatically Operated Equipment. ‘Two 10,000-watt automatically opera- ted flood lights are being installed at Bolling Field and will be placed in operation this week for night flying operations. These lights, one of which is located on the east side of the field near the operations office, and the other on the south end of the field, will make Bolling Field one of the best lighted airports in | this part of the country. ‘The lights are located in galvanized fron buildings about 6 feet square and 7 feet high. The walls on three sides slide down to expose the hufi lenses. Each light has three great light house lenses mounted before it in a half-circle so as to flood the entire field area before it. The lenses for each light are said to cost $12,000. Each light will flood an area a mile square, the plane of light being cen- tered about 5 feet above the ground. It is expected that the lights will be bright enough to make it possible for a man a mile away to read a newspaper in the direct beam. The lights will be controlled from the operations office. The pressure of a button there will turn on the light and Jower the walls of the “Nght-houses” so as to expose the lenses. The lights are so arranged that sliding down of the walls by hand will turn on the light in case of emergency or disabling of the distant control switch. ‘Three lights are arranged behind each lens so that in case one light burns out the second will be switched on auto- matically, and if this also fails the third ‘will be put into operation. ‘While the lights were installed by the Army for Armwy operations they will be of great value to the air mail flyers on the New York-Atlanta-Miami air mail line. Both northbound and southbound Pplanes on this line land at Bolling Field during the night. PAY RELIEF BILL FACES DELAY AGAIN TOMORROW President Stewart of Employes’ Federation Hopes to Have Measure Called Up. ‘The new pay relief bill, fathered by Chairman Lehibach of the House civil service committee, which is a composite of the Lehlbach-Brookhart-Celler meas- ures, probably will not come up in the House tomorrow under suspension of the rules. ‘Tomorrow is to be unanimous consent ! and suspension day, and Luther C. Stories of diamond smuggling and the part human hair plays in the winning of a war turned the thoughts of mem- bers of the House ways and means com- mittee away from mathematics and economics yesterday for the first time since they began tariff revision hearings six weeks ago. Diamond smuggling, the committee was told by Walter N. Kahn of New York, representing importers of precious stones, was increasing at an alarming rate under the present 20 per cent ad valorem duty on cut stones, and not even the entire United States Army could stop it as long as the tariff re- mains to make the risk worth while. He suggested a cut in the rate to 10 | per cent to protect the legitimate im- gner of diamonds and the placing on free list of uncut or rough precious stones.
