NEW SAFETY DEVIGE ! INFLYING LAUDED {LCowling for Radial Air-Cooled i Engines Increases Plane Utility, Is Claim. —— ‘The speed safety, economy and flying [wange of multi-motored transport air- planes such as are used on the passen- | ger lines of the country, wil be mate- | rially increased by the application of the new cowling for radial air-cooled en- | gines, developed by the National Advis- ory Committee for Aeronatuics, Govern- gfint officials stated in a report issued ! Today's report deals with the, applica- s tion of the cowling to outboard motors, ‘h previous report having been issued on !the application of central fuselage | motors mounted as in the case of sin- gle_motored planes. Use of the new cowling on tri-motored | planes having cruising speed of 100 | miles an hour will increase she speed to 120 or 125 miles per hour, an increase represented by an expenditure of $9,000 for additional motor power, the report sald. The cowling costs but $25 per motor. A fuel saving also is claimed. ‘The cowls cover irregular projec- tions of the motor, reducing air resist- ance and regulating the flow of air about the hottest portions of the motors 80 as to increase cooling efficiency. The safety is increased because of the fact that a plane will be able to fly as well with two cowled motors as with thres uncowled engines. Thus it was indicated that if the Fokker transport plane from Bolling Field which crashed near Middletown, Pa., recently, with a Joss of eight lives, had been equipped with motor cowls the fatal crash could have been avoided when one of the en- gines failed.
