Heffros Eve 'y a8 blcked L3/ soind, and are Come in and et It was announced in the financial district today by Henry W. Brawner, jr., that the outstanding $1,000,000 issue of preferred stock of Chestnut Farms Dairy, Inc., will be called for redemp- tion on March 15 at $110 per share and accrued dividends. Payment will be made at the office of Crane, Parris & Co., 821 Fifteenth street, the investment banking firm which put the issue out about a year ago. The redeeming of this stock fol- lows special action taken recently by the board of directors and approved by the shareholders. After March 15 the stock will no longer pay interest. The stock is called because of the recent merger of Chestnut Farms Dairy, Inc., with the National Dairy Products Corporation. There is also an outstanding issue of common stock, the shareholders having already been notified of the terms on which they may exchange their stock for shares in the other company. Although affiliated with National Dairy, the Washington concern will continue under local man- agement, President Brawner announced. Carl Officers and Directors. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 13.—After a series of erratic fluctuations today's stock market worked irregularly - up- ward. Volume was heavy at the open- ing and the list was very strong. It sold off around midday, rallied again and | left off with mixed price changes. o Money, renewing at 7 per cent, development which had the effect of postooning threatened lionidation. The leaders on the sid> of advance were the copner stocks and the utilities, with Anacanda and American & Foreign Power the features. United States Steel was heavv after earlv strength and so were most of the motors. The overnight orders were nredom- inantly on the buying side and all the leading stocks showed advances on the initial transactions. United States Steel started in at 180 on 7,500 sheres. un over 2 points, New York Central at 195 was up 3 voints and Internatinnal Nickel on a 10,000 share ‘ot up 134 points at 65. Monteomery- Ward eained 31, points at 134 and Consolidated Gas above 113 was up al- monet 3 points. The market had little news on which to act. Attempts were made to exnlain the eorly strength bv the failure of the New York Federal Reserve directors to make any statement after their meet- ing of Monday. was. however. no change in the attitude of the reserve authorities. and while the immediate nosition of rall monev was easy. finda- mental conditions had not altered. What really happened was that shorts who had not covered Monday took in their contracts at the opening today. It was again evident that there is an unusually large contingent readv to put out stocks for the fall on the slightest excuse, but not willing to stay with their commit- ments when the market turns against them, even temvorarily. Two stocks which showed themselves sensitive to selling were U. S. Steel and Chrysler. Before noon steel was down 3 points from its early high and lower on the day. Chrysler came off a smaller amount and vet there was no weakness in either of them: Money senewed at 715 per cent and was in supnly at that figure, with indi- cations that the rate might go lower. PHILADELPHIA, Fel Clerks, ~stenographers should keep out of the stock markety Edward C. Bendere of Cassatt & Co, bankers, said here in an address at the annual meeting of Group 2, Penn- sylvania Bankers' Association. “Seventy-five per cent of the people in the stock market today are not go- ing to make money,” he said. - “But the brokers will get the commissions. The 25 per cent who will make money are those who have enough to buy stocks outright and forget about them. “The time has come when bankers should take strong steps to advise these people to keep out of the market. Clerks and stenographers in the stock market now have no place there. The cycle will turn, and I want to issue the warning now. “Woman as a class should be kept out of the market. This is due to a tem- peramental condition. A few of them are better suited, however, than most men for stock market speculation, but there are few.” THREE MOTOR BUS COMPANIES MERGE Special Dispatch to The Star. DANVILLE, Va.
