RN Roughleg the Hawk had come down to the Green Meadows just at the be- ginning of Winter. His summer home was far North: Roughleg was in the habit of coming every year. He always thought of the Green Meadows, down back of Farmer Brown's, as his Winter home. Usually he fared very well down there. It was seldom that he could not find mice enough to keep him in good condition. and very comfortable. But this Winter there had been one storm after another, and the snow lay deep over the Green Meadows. They ~were very beautiful to look at, were “‘the Green Meadows, now that they S Hlanw /" “IT'S NO USE,” SAID HE AT LAST. were all pure white. That is, they ~would have been very beautiful for or for me to look at, but Rough- the Hawk could see no beauty in them. No, sir; he could s:e no beauty in that snow. “Just as if it isn't hard enough to eatch mice anyway,” grumbled Rough- leg, as he sat in the top of a tall tree in the middle of the Green Meadows, ‘where he could look in all directions. “Now comes all this snow and buries everything. How can I catch mice when F can't see them? When there was no snow I could sometimes see ‘them in the grass, and sometimes I could see the grass move and that would tell me just where they were. Wut_now they can run about under- neath the snow and I don't know any- thing about them. Why, Danny Meadow Mouse could live for a week right un- THE EVENING D. C. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY STAR, WASHINGTON, BY THORNTON | W. BURGESS anything about it. I'm so hungry now that it seems as if I am starved. Peter Rabbit is sticking to his dear Old/ Briar-patch and there isn't a chance in the world for me to get him there. My, I would like a Rabbit! It will take some one as big as a Rabbit to fill me up. I don’t believe I ever was quite so empty. I believe I'll fly over along the edge of the Green Forest. If I sit here much longer, I'm afraid I'll gro~ to be a part of this tree. Watchful waiting is all right, but there is such a thing| as too much waiting. When things do not come to you, try going after thei That is what I call good, sound sense.” | With this Roughleg took to his big wings and flew over along the edge of the Green Forest. His sharp eyes were busy every second. He hoped he might see a Wood Mouse. He even hoped that he might see a Squirrel. He didn't forget that Jumper the Hare sometimes came to the edge of the Green Forest. He even flew over the Green Forest, looking down through the branches of the trees, hoping and hoping to see something he could eat. “It's no use,” said he at last, “it looks to me as if I shall have to go farther South. I don't want to. No, sir; I don't want to, but I cannot starve to death and that is what I shall do if I stay here without getting something to eat pretty soon. Hal What is that little spot over there on the Meadows? As I live, it is a Mouse! He has come up on top of the snow to get some of the weed seeds.” It was so. It was Danny Meadow Mouse. The tops of some of the weeds stood out above the snow and these weed tops were full of seeds. All Danny had to do was to sit up on the snow and help himself. It is because he can do this that Danny always likes plenty of snow. He is safe underneath it and at the same time it enables him to get a good living more easily. Roughleg. like all members of the Hawk family, has wonderful eyes, It was a long distance from where he was to where Danny was sitting, but he saw and recognized Danny. He could see that Danny was sitting back to him. Roughleg flew higher and higher. ‘Then, when he thought he was high enough, he moved toward Danny Meadow Mouse. He had very little hope of suc- cess, but Danny was the first Mouse he had seen that day and he intended to try for him anyway. But he was only half way when Danny suddenly dived down into .dume hole in the snow and disappeared. “Just my luck!” murmured Rough- leg and kept on to his perch in the lone tree. (Copyright, 1829.) Quarrymen at Harbury, Warwick- shire, England, uncovered some strange- looking material and before disturbing it to any great extent sought the ad- vice of geologists, whereupon the work of uncovering proceeded very carefully and it was soon discovered that it was a rather important and interesting find. It was a well preserved skeleton of a member of the lizard family, which lived in a time almost too remote to think about. This skeleton is 16 feel long and the largest similar - men heretofore known measured only a little more than a third of this.
