As Vicks VapoRub is ap- plied externally, it can be used fnely, even on the youngest child, with no fear of upsetting the most delicate stomach. A SAFE EXTERNAL TREATMENT When flu is around, don’t let children keep a cold over-night. At the very first sign, put the child to bed. Apply hot wet towels on the throat and chest until the skin is thoroughly reddened. Then rub vigorously with Vicks, Spread on thickly and cover with warm flannel. . Leave the bed-covering loose around the neck so that Vicks medicated vapors, released by the body warmth, can be freely inhaled. They are breathed in direct to the inflamed air-pas- sages, loosening the phlegm and clearing the head. ‘At the same time, Vicks acts through the skin like a poultice, “drawing out” tightness and soreness. After a Flu-Attack Don't let the children get up too soon; rest in bed helps nature to build up the vitality. and be careful to avoid sudden chills. Don’t let them work or play too hard, ‘Above all, stop every cold at the start. ‘At this time, more than ever, colds attacking the weakened system may lead to bron- chitis, abscess of the ear, sinus-trouble, or pneumonia. Of course, Vicks 2-way action is just as effective for adults’ cold- troubles as it is for children’s. ICKS »VAPORUB Over-17. CHICAGO, February 4—Bullets con- tinue to cut down the membership of “Joe Saltis’ mob.” Eddie Piech got three bullets in the chest yesterday when he found police waiting for him in his apartment. Last Thursday it was Steve (Bull Cain) Kuczynski, “trafic manager” in the beer business of which police say Saltis is the head. Kuczynski was shot dead in a South Side apartment, apparently the victim of jealousies that have developed in the Saltis ranks since the leader be- gan serving a jail sentence for carrying concealed weapons. Tries to Bribe Officer. Plech was shot by Police Sergeant Thomas Casey when he tried to escape. He complained of feeling ill and asked Casey to get him a drink of water. As the officer stepped into the Kkitchen Piech leaped for the window, smashing the pane with his fist. Before he could jump Casey fired three times. With blood oozing from his wounds Piech propped himself against the wall. “Gimme a pass (let me escape),” said to Casey. “It's worth $100 to you. " “Nothing doing,” the officer answered. “Five hundred, then,” said Piech. “Aw, cut it out,” Cusey said. “All right, shoot me,” shouted Piech, lurching toward the window as though to jump the 20 feet to the ground. Gang Is Disorganized. ‘The officer fired again. Piech, wanted in connection with the Savoy ballroom, the Granada cafe and other recent rob- beries, fell with another bullet wound. HL; condition today was said to be crit- ical. Lieut. Wiliam Cusack identified Piech as a member of the “Saltis mob.” Since Saltis went to jail, he said, the gang has become disorganized, many members turning from beer running to other crimes. el Deaths Reported. e following_deaths have been reported to lh! CHICAGO, February 4.—The mys- terious death of Mrs. Selma Burnha wealthy and eccentric widow, had as- sumed many aspects of a detective “thriller” y. Mrs, Burnham, who was left approxi- mately $1,000,000 by her late husband, gum machine manufacturer, died Fri- day. Police at first believed her death the result of poisoning, but have since turned to the theory of alcoholism. To- day they were seeking to find from bootleggers the name of the person who supplied her with liquor. From neighbors and relatives officers have gained the impression that Mrs. Burnham might have been given alcohol steadily by a person who knew it might cause her death. Another investigation today had for | 8itl its purpose the location of the assets of the widow’s estate. Officers found, hidden in an old desk, two bank books showing deposits of $25,000. A completely fitted bar was discovered in_the basement of her home. Police were holding Edward T. Riley, & business partner, who claims that Mrs. Burnham signed 55 per cent of the mmulaccurlng business over to him. A hbor wguaonce that Mrs. Burnham snl Riley given her something to drink fust before she went to the hos- pital where she died. A hearing on the estate was to be held in Probate Court today. A legal battle was expected between Riley and Mrs. Burnham’s relatives.
