Secured by First Trusts Conservative Appraisals Decline in One Group Brings Market Average to y Record Low. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 4.—Of more significance than the irregular move- ments in speculative or inactive bonds today was the heavy tone again in high- grade rails. Many of these issues in the past week have sold either below or close to the low figures of 1928. Their decline has brought the general average of the domestic bond market to the lowest of the year. The supply is not large, | but even with offerings of the present | size there is not sufficient buying power to keep.the list steady. The condition is due not only to the high rates for money, but to a cer- tain amount. of selling by those who are tired out by the action of bonds and {are putting their funds into securities that have a greater amount of play. | The convertible issues did not move over so wide a range today. Several of them were under the influence of profit taking. This was especially true of In- ternational Telephone 41;s, Alleghany gorporntlnn 5s. American International 15 , in which last week's total turn- was approximately 20 per cent of the entire bond transactions on the stock exchange. The Alleghany Corpora- ;‘i_m;‘ issue was 5 points under its recent igh. Outside of this group, and distinctly strong, were Anaconda Copper 7, Porto Rico Tobacco 6s and International Cement 5s, in which the gains were be- | tween 2 and 3 points. Dodge 6s were heavy and have lost 2!, points since the break in Chrysler stock started. One of the significant features of the junior rail market was the further decline in the new 41 per cent bonds of the Frisco, Wabash & {Rock Island, and the weakness in the older issues of the same coupon of the Great Northern, Illinois Central and Burlington. An issue of $25,000,000 Central Public Service convertible 555 at 9612 is to be offered in a day or two. Thé bonds are convertible into 6 per cent pre- ferred stock. There were about $17,000,000 of tax- exempt bonds offered today to a mar- ket that has improved somewhat since the first of the year. ‘The new Prussian Electric 6 per cent debentures had the effect of stimulat- ing the price of Eléctric Power Corpo- | ration of Germany 615s, which advanced 3 points in a belated recognition of their relatively high yield. The Con- solidated Gas of Baltimore 4% repre- sented the highest type of public util- {ity bond that has been brought out in some time, with the issue legal for sav- ings banks in seven States. SAFEWAY STORES CHAIN | By the Assoclated Press. { LOS ANGELES, February 4.— The | acquisition of 183 Piggly Wiggly Gro- cery Stores in the Los Angeles metro- politan area by the Safeway Stores Co., a Maryland holding corporation of chain grocery and vegetable stores, was announced by Edward Dale, vice presi- dent of latter firm. Value of the 183 merged stores was estimated at $3,500,000. The consoli- dation, which becomes effective Tues- day, was described as forming the third largest grocery chain in the country. ‘The chain's business volume for 1929 was estimated at $180,000,000. . Changed weather conditions probably will result in a decided improvement in wholesale trading this week. It was warm enough this morning to_enable dealers in fruits and vegetables to make more attractive displays than they were able to make last week. It is expected that increased business will follow the return to the city of Herbert C. Hoover from Florida, many visitors from all sections of the coun- try being expected to reach here shortly. There is not the slightest possibility of a shortage of any food products for the approaching inaugural period, deal- ers report, and it is said that prices probably will be cheaper than prices quoted today. Heavy snow in the Shenandoah Val- ley last week delayed a number of haulers of eggs, poultry and all kinds of produce farmers are sending to the Jocal market. Some of the delayed haulers reached here the last of the week, however, and expect to reach here on time this week. Dealers this morning had ample sup- plies of all commodities to meet de- mands of retailets, prices being about the same as prices quoted the last of the week. Special Dispatch to The Star. | NEW HAVEN, Conn., February 4.—| The stock market brightened and| strengthened toward the end of last week with big advances Thursday in many of the market favorites, sending the price indexes up to new high marks. The week’s performance was spotty, however. The entire industrial list ad: vanced less than 1} per cent. were stationary. Rails and preferred shares moved up only fractionally, but the utilities group scored a_ sharp in- crease. The best group advance was ain in the motors, with General otors, Nash and Studebaker conspic- uous. Despite Thursday's sharp rises in fa- vorites and the new high records for| the industrial indexes, only three of the industrial groups showed gains for the week, and that of steels was scarcely | noticeable. The rise in the miscella- | neous group was largely attributable to Du Pont, General Electric and National Cash Register, which showed gains for the week of 15 to 50 points each. The stores, foods. coppers, accessories and oils groups all showed slight de- clines, that of the stores being most marked, their index going off 2! points, or over 1 per cent. National Bellas Hess, National Tea and Shattuck were each off 5 points or so. The market leaders pegged up a heavy average ad- | vance, the index going up ever 17 points, or nearly 2> per cent. The rate | of return on market leaders dropped a | tenth of 1 per cent. | ‘The compact survey of New York Stock Exchange movements of common | industrial shares is given below in price | indexes (1926=100) for all shares out-| standing and for the week’s 50 most active stocks. At the end of last week the rails were the leaders in the trading. What was more significant, the Street was willing to believe rumors concerning possibilities in the railroad world that it would not have listened to a few weeks ago. It also made a great deal of facts that have for years been well known to the average person who makes a study of conditions. One of the stimulating announce- ments, speculatively, was that the Bal- timore & Ohio was seeking control of the Reading and the Central Railroad of New Jersey and will file its appli- ation with the Interstate Commerce Commission shortly for permission to acquire these properties. \ The relationship between all three lines, have, of course, been most inti- mate for years through the ihvestment the Baltimore & Oho made in the Reading under the Loree management years ago. In this investment it had as a partner the New York Central. Eventually it had been hoped to effect a trede whereby the Baltimore & Ohio ‘would obtain the New York Central’s Reading shares for other railroad in- vestments which would fit more closely into its own transportation program. It is possible that strong objection may be entered to Baltimore & Ohio's control of the Reading by Pennsylvania rajlroad interests. The Taplin group, who own the Pittsburgh & West Virginia railroad and have a large minority- holding of Wheeling & Lake Erie, would like to get the Western Maryland for their projected “ocean-to-the-lakes" route. Control of this former Rockefeller | road now rests with the Baltimore & Ohio. Objection has been made to a continuance of this and in order to pre- serve the situation it has been suggested hat possibly the Reading might take over the Western Maryland stock now vested with the Baltimore & Ohio. Statements made in the letter, the official wrote. are based on an analysis of the egg industry in Virginia recently completed by the statistical department of the company. The letter is in part as follows: “Receipts of the different grades of eggs for the year of 1928, as compared to the years, 1927, 1926 and 1923, into the larger Virginia markets indicate a very large increase in consumption, as well as production. “There can be no doubt but what a very marked improvement has been shown in the general quality of eggs offered for sale in the State of Vir- ginia during the past four ye: ‘The demand from the pack jobbers and other wholesale distributors of eggs has clearly shown us that the consuming public benefits greatly from the inspee- tion and educational service rendered by your department. “It is a matter of common knowledge among the dealers in eggs that for a great many years Western and North- ern shippers of eggs would ship their fancy packs of eggs to the Boston, New York and Philadelphia markets, and the seccnd grade packs to the Southern 'markets, where less attention was being | paid to quality and proper grading. This< situation, we are pleased to state, has been drastically changed during the past few years.
