WOMAN CAUGHT IN RAID ASKS FOR JURY TRIAL Held Under $2,000 Bond on Liquor and Disorderly House Charges. Irene May Saunders, 33 years old, pleaded not guilty and demanded a jury trial on charges of manufacture, sale, possession of liquor and main- taining a disorderly house, when ar- raigned in Police Court yesterday. Lieut. J. A. Sullivan, Precinct De- tective J. E. Boxwell and policemen from the sixth precinct raided premises at 435 H street Sunday and arrested the woman. Officers said they found four quarts of .whisky and that Miss Saunders’ condition led them to believe she had been drinking. Joseph Azarello, 25 years old, was arrested at the same time and charged with sale and pos- session of liquor and keeping a disor- derly house. The raiders allege that when they were in ssion of the premises two soldiers from Walter Reed Hospital en- tered and attempted to make a pur- chase. Miss. Saunders and Azarello were re- lsasled on $2,000 bond each for jury trial. o The first patent issued by the Secre- tary of State for a threshing machine was dated March 11, 1791, being the seventh on the records of the office, to Samuel Mulliken of Philadelphia. NEW YORK, January 29.—Victory in his battle to oust Col. Robert W. Stew- art as chairman of the board of the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana was claimed for John D. Rockefeller, jr., today. An associate of Stewart dis- agreed. ‘Thomas M. Debevoise, manager_ of the Rockefeller campaign for proxies to be voted at the annual meeting of the com) March 7, said he believed the Rockefeller group now has enough votes to swing the election. 90 Per Cent to Be Represented. It is estimated that approximately 90 per cent of the total stock will be represented at the meet] and that control means the holding of more than 45 per cent of the proxies. There are 9,282,000 shares of stock held by 58,000 stockholders. ‘The fight by Stewart to retain his position in the company in defiance of Rockefeller, which resolved itself into an intensive drive on both sides for proxies, has attracted widespread at- tention. The contest had its origin in the refusal of Stewart to resign at the re- quest of Rockefeller after the chairman had appeared before the Senate com- mitte investigating the Teapot Dome oil leases. Testimony of Stewart con- cerning his relations with the Con- tinental Trading Corporation displeased Rockefeller. Stewart Manager Scoffs. George K. Bowden, who has been handling Stewart’s proxy eam) New York, said he did not believe the Rockefeller group had enough proxies to control the election, ‘The chief source of the Rockefeller strength is believed to lie in the stock held by large estates, while Stewart has claimed the support of the board of directors of the Indiana company and the stock held by emp!oyes. Building in New York City one of the many famous build- ings designed by Ludlow & Peabody. “Every home, whether it be of five or twenty-five rooms, should be built to give maximum service at mini- mum upkeep cost.” Koo *@"””b TO be permanently proof against rust your home should be constructed with materials of Copper, Brass and Bronze.' Brass pipe, Copper flashings, gutters and downspouts and solid Brass or Bronze hardware and lighting fixtures cannot rust. They serve without replacement for the life of the house. The greatest architects of America are almost unanimous in endorsing these eternal materials. As William Orr Ludlow says: “Copper, Brass and Bronze are accepted as practically standard equipment in all buildings where permanency is a primary requisite—public buildings, libraries, churches, ete. And it seems to us that the very qualities which make them suitable for use in buildings of these types should recommend them for use in private homes.” When you build, buy or remodel, insist on these materials. Other metals may resist rust for a few years. But Copper, Brass and Bronze are rust-proof. In the long run they are a very real economy. Write our Building Service Department for additional in- formation. There is no obliga- tion on your part. ’ v ’ Considering their lifelong service and their absolute protection against rust, Copper, Brass and Bronze are not ex- pensive even in the construction of small homes. - COPPER & BRAS RESEARCH ASSOCIA’NON 25 Broadway, New York Midwestern Office: Canadian Office: Pacific Coast Office: Landreth Building 67 Yonge Street Architects Building St. Louis, Mo.
