GENEVA, January 24.—Sir Eric Drummond, secretary general of the League of Nations, and Lady Drummond last night gave a farewell dinner in honor of Michael MacWhite and Mrs, | MacWhite, who are leaving today for Washington, where Mr. MacWhite will become Minister from the Irish Free State. Among the guests were Elbridge D. Rand, United States consul, and Mrs. Rand. Mr. and Mrs. MacWhite expect to reach Washington on March 1. They have already been invited to welcom- ing banquets by Chicago and other citles, Mr. MacWhite, who was Irish dele- gate to the League of Nations, has had an adventurous career. He was a real hero in the World War, but doesn’t like to talk about it. For five years he held a modest posi- tion in a bank, but at night he pored over books. He educated himself. War Career. The next outstanding period fn Mae | White's life is his war carcer. He had adventerous experiences as a soldier in the Balkan campaign before the great war. When the great conflict came the young Irishman enlisted in the famous | French Foreign Legion and served in France, Africa and the Balkans. Later he was sent to the Sahara and was chief of a detachment which protected camel convoys to Timbuctoo. Then he was ordered to the United States with other Leeionnaires and g:ve lectures in behalf of the Liberty loan. He was presented to President Wilson at Washington and later he was one of | the men on the “war relic train” which | passed through New York State selling | Liberty bonds. Turning back to Ireland, he again | interested himself in the Irish cause of freedom. He became secretary of the | 4 Irish delegation which went to the | peace conference at Paris. In 1921, be- ; | fore the Anglo-Irish treaty negotiations | had succeeded, he was sent by Griffith to Geneva as Ireland's first delegate to present the Irish side on political gues- tions in case of need.
