By the Associated Press. TUCSON, Ariz., January 21.—The re- turn flight to Washington of the mono- plane Question Mark, princess of the skies, will be stayed at Midland, Tex., this afternoon in order that ‘the chief pilot, Capt. Ira Eaker, can attend the funeral of his mother, who died just before her son set out to write in the sky an epilogue to the endurance plane’s recent unexcelled flight. Mrs. Y. Y. Eaker, whose serious ill- ness last week held up the return flight of the Army plane while her son hur- ried home to her bedside at Eden, Tex., died there yesterday morning of pneu- monia a short time before the Question Mark left San Diego. The Question Mark and an accom- panying refueling plane which served it in the recent 150-hour sustained flight in the vicinity of Los Angeles reached here in the afternoon after five hours of easy flight, and will continue to Mid- land today. The refueling ship was scheduled to transfer 150 gallons of and El Paso, An early take-off was planued in order that Capt. Eaker can reach Eden, 150 miles east of Midland, in time for the funeral. It is possible the refueling ship or another plane will be provided the Army pilot for the trip. Capt. Eaker received the news of his mother’s death before the plane left, and was bowed by grief when he ar- rived here. An informal reception for the Army flyers was canceled. When |Capt. Eaker started the epochal test flight both his parents were ill in a San Angelo hospital. They werc cheered when news came that the captain had landed safely, and Lie immediately flew to see them. Mrs. Eaker appeared to be much better when her son returned to San Dlego last Thursday. The elder Eaker now is recovering from a mastoid operation at San Angelo. MRS. VANDERBILT BETTER.
