18 = THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, MONDAY, JANUARY 21, 1929. COMMITTEE GIVEN SUGAR TARIFF ROW, Request Made That Levy on| Raw Product Be Raised Cent a Pound. By the Assoclated Pres The long controversy over the sugar | tariff was given today to the House ways and means committee now hear- ing proposals for revision of duties and | at the outset a request was made that v on raw sugar be raised 1 cent ent tariff is 2.2 cents and the increase, proposed by Fred Cum- mings of Fort Collins, Colo., on behalf of the Mountain States Beet Growers' Association, would make the duty on Cuban sugar 256 cents. The Cuban product would not feel the full effect of the raise because it is granted a 20 per cent reduction in ‘the duty under the preferential trade treaty with the United States, Cuba now pays 1.76 cents, First Witness Heard. e first witness of six groups ready conflicting views on the subject, argued that beet growers raise beets at a profit under ing rate. Last year, he said, v barely met the cost of production, ich he placed at $7 a ton. The in- ase, he said, would allow the grow- s to make $1 a ton profit on sugar, which was the average profit in the three years beefore 1928. Cummings contended the 1-cent raise would not increase cost to the American housewife more than cents a year, adding that sugar was the only food product selling at this time at pre- war prices, while farmers’ maclnm‘l;y costs had increased 65 per cent. e posi ) 2% declared that unless present duty | chivalrous in history. free Philippine sugar imports were lim- jted, the beet sugar growers of the West would have to go out of busi-| ness. | Dislikes Word “Relief.” | | “I don't like the word relief,” Cum- mings said. “The farmers are entitled to ordinary, decent treatment. They are not seeking charity.” Under questioning the witness said the United States grew about 50 per cent of the sugar it consumed, the other half being imported, 90 per cent from Cuba. i The proposal to restrict Philippine imports developed into a discussion of Philippine independence. Representative Collier, Democrat, Mississippi, asked if it would not be proper to “treat the islands right or turn them loose.” “If we turn them loose,” he observed, “we could place the same tariffs against their products as against those of other countries.” “We have been good to the Philip- pines,” Cummins declaved, adding that the “farmers of this country were en- titled to the same.treatment. In fact, they should come first.” TWO INJURED BY PISTOL. Gun Is Discharged Accidentally While Being Examined.
