3 = THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, MONDAY, TJANUARY T4 1929. WOMENS CHARGES DENED BY DAVS Labor Secretary Declares At- tack on Bureau Is With- out Foundation. Charges made against the Women's Bureau of the Labor Department by the National Woman's Party, in which the bureau was criticized as “biased and unfair” in connection with a re- port on employment for women, were “unfounded,” Secretary of Labor Davis declared in,a statement made public today by the National Woman's Party. In a reply to the statement of the Labor Secretary, the Woman's Party reiterates its statement, claiming that * “since the Women's Bureau is so strongly prejudiced in favor of so- called protective laws for women its investigation is necessarily biased.” In making the investigation on employ- ment for women the bureau, ac- cording to the statement, had the as- sistance of an advisory committee of experts, consisting of Miss Mary Van Kleeck, Dr. Lillian M. Gilbreth and Dr. Charles Neill. Miss Van Kleeck and Dr. Gilbreth “have long been support- ers of the restrictive industrial laws which were the subject of the investi- gation,” the statement said, and “can by no means be called impartial.” ‘The Woman's Party sponsors an equal rights amendment to make industrial laws applicable equally to men and women. “No investigation is needed,” the woman's party said, “to prove that daws based on this principle will not handicap women, but will be of equal bfirlx(efl! to all workers, men and women alike.” ‘The statement by the party claimed the Women's Bureau in investigation of employment conditions refused to hold open hearings, at which those believ- ing in industrial equality could call witnesses or produce facts.
