NEW YORK, January 14.—For out- standing heroism in rescuing four per- sons from drowning at the risk of their own lives three Boy Scouts have been awarded the gold honor medal of the Boy Scouts of America by the national court of honor. Those voted this high- est award in scouting were: Edward A. Bush, Brooklyn; Theodore Antonich, 1807 Black Eagle Smelter avenue, Great Falls, Mont., and Joseph Erienwein, 388 Lechner avenue, Columbus, Ohio. Certificates Awarded. Certificates of heroism for demon- strating the use of Scout training in saving the lives of others most of the rescues not involving so great a risk to the life of the rescuer, have been awarded to: Lloyd Paalmer, Sedro-Wooley, Wash.; Erwin Walker, Wilson, N. C.; Herbert Zupnick, Mars., Pa.; John Rentz, Lima, Ohio; Leo Skeim, Minot, N. D.; John Sandstrom, Middletown, Conn; Ned Brooks and W. J. Breeeding, jr., Nor- man, Okla.; Clarence Schweizer, Wal- lington, N. J.; George Eichhorn, Du- buque, Iowa, and Vincent Myers, New Boston, Ohio. ‘The major award went to Scout Er- lenwein for his rescue in Buckeye Lake, Ohio, in July, 1927, of Mrs. Clifford Lewis and Miss Gladys Anderson, both of Columbus. Both Sink Below Surface. Mrs. Lewis was teaching Miss Ander- soh to swim when the girl became frightened and obtained a strangle hold on her teacher. Both went under, but the Scout reached them and brought them to shore, Erlenwein said nothing of the accident and only the casual re- marks of witnesses months later brought about the reward. Antonich pulled Arthur Norgard from the Missouri River on June 28, 1928, when a rope on which Norgard was swinging broke and he fell into the swift stream. Smedley D. Butler, cammanding the 3d Brigade of United States Marines in China, who is leaving for America shortly, was presented today with a massive silver cup by the American As- soctation of Tientsin. The cup, of Chinese design, is competed for annual- Iy by the Marines. The spokesman of the Tientsin Amer- icans expressed gratitude for the protec- tion afforded by the Marines, whose presence probably averted bloodshed during the unsettled conditions during the revolution.
