BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 14—Shaking off early irregularity today's stock mar- ket turned strong in the afternoon under a combination of short covering and new buying. The turnover was moderate, but both industrials and rails % | worked upward. All the rubber stocks were in de- mand under leadership of United States Rubber responding to the strength in the market for crude. United States Rubber was helped also by the more active part in its management to be taken by the du Pont interests. Another development which encourag- ed the bull party in the later trading was the strength in United States Steel. It ran up some 2 points influenced by talk of favorable tariff action. The bear element in the motor stocks beat a retreat and Studebaker, Chrysler, Nash and General Motors joined Hupp, which had been strong early in the day, in a spirited advance. The spectacular feature of the after- noon, however, was the sudden run-up in Allied Chemical. Selling at 272, it was not only at a new high for the present shares, but up 15 points on the day. The irregularity in the forenoon -was due apparently to renewed doubt about the credit situation. It was a day in which attention was paid to specific issues rather than to the market as a whole. The market held its strength through- out the last hour, numerous stocks im- proving on their earlier advances and others coming to the front for the first time today. Open. High. Low.
