A, | retired, died at 10 o'clock last night at Walter Reed Hospital, following a lin- gering illness. He was brought to the | hospital three weeks ago from his home in Hampton, Va, by his wife, who has remained at his bedside since that time. Maj. Rathgeber was widely known in Army circles, having served with dis- tinction over a period of 35 years prior to his retirement a few years ago. He entered the Army at an early age by enlistment and rose rapidly from the ranks. He was a veteran of three wars, the Indian Wars, the War with Spain and the World War, during which he commanded a battalion of Philippine | Scouts in the Philippine Islands. He was a_member of the Masonic order and the Order of Veterans of the In- dian Wars. He was 57 years old. Maj.
