Washington Gas Light stock, which was the sensation of yesterday’s session, was less active today, although { 77 shares changed hands. The stock opened at 101'2, up a fourth from yes- terday’s close. Sixty shares then sold at 102 and the final sale included seven shares at 1013%. The drop in the stock from 106 to 101 has caused much dis- cussion among market observers, but the various explanations appear to be most- ly guesses. Capital Traction was strong *today, selling at 107!2. Potomac Electric Power preferred again commanded 112 and the 5 per cent issue 108';. Wash- ington Railway & Electric preferred | moved at 997. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. | NEW YORK, December 6.—With al-| ternate periods of weakness and| strength, this morning's stock market | was_ still erratic and uncertain. Fav- ored industrials were bid up again, {some of them to new highs, simul- tancously with heavy leaning in other parts of the list. Initial quotations were generally lower, but not importantly so. The overnight orders were predominantly on the sclling side. The market ab- sorbed them with only minor losses, and then operations for the rise were resumed in specific issues. ‘The motor stocks were in active de- mand, under leadership of Packard and | of Chrysler. Packard climbed 8 more | points to a new high as it sold at 158, | and Chrysler added nearly four points | to its gain just below 138. Buying in | these two stocks was persistent and ap- parently confident. General Motors lag- | ged behind, but was not weak, while | Brockway led the truck issues, rising 4 H | points. | Industrial Specialties. Among the industrial specialties, Johns-Marwille had a sharp recovery. | Burroughs Adding Machine sold at a | new top above 200 and A. M. Byers did the same around 205. Mohawk | Carpet, a comparative newcomer to | the exchange, was given a whirl into | record high territory. The merchandising and mail order stocks moved uncertainly. Associated | Dry Goods made a new top early in the | session, but reacted afterward. May Department, Sears-Roebuck and Wool- worth were lower. So was National Bellas Hess. | Then there was the curious phenoma enon of heaviness in the coppers and in both of which trades the outlook is especially good. Cupp@ri stocks sold off easily and fhe oils were | almost uniformly lower. The most rea- | sonable explanation was the lack of any considerable short interest in these stocks, The rails did little notwithstanding the repeated predictions of a “big bull market~in carrier stocks.” Kansas City Southern, Norfolk & Western and Texas & Pacific_ were up moderately, while Missouri-Kansas-Texas, Chesapeake & Ohio and Rock Island were down. Gas, International Telephone & Tele- graph and North American. The local tractions did better. Trade Volume Small. Money renewed at 9 per cent as it had done on the day before. For a time it looked as though the rate might go lower, but demand increased in the early afternoon with the result that the charge was raised to 10 per cent, equal- ing the high of the year. The volume Wall Street Briefs Reports of a merger of Travel Air Co. of Wichita, Kans.,, with Keystone Aircraft Co. of Bristol, Pa.,.and pos- sibly with Wright Aeronautical ~Co. have been denied. The fact that Rich- ard F. Hoyt, chairman of the board of Wright, is also a director of Travel Air and Keystone is believed to have led to the reports. Banking interests close to Travel Air state the company, for the present, will continue as an independent manufacturer of commercial planes. David Sarnoff has been elected chair- man of the board and Hiram S. Brown executive vice president of the Keith- Albee-Orpheum Corporation, the thea- ter and vaudeville unit of the newly formed Radio-Keith-Orpheum Corpo- ration. Edward F. Albee continues as president. Joseph P. Kennedy volun- tarily retired as chairman and director. | The board was reduced from 19 to 9 members and includes Sarnoff, Brown, | Albee, Elisha Walker, Paul M, Mazur, Marcus Heiman, Maurice Goodman, | Lee Shubert and B. B. Kahane. Sarnoff also was elected chairman and Brown president of the Orpheum Circuit, Inc. W. R. Campbell, vice president and treasurer of the Ford Motor Co. of Canada, Ltd., believes 1929 will be the greatest year in Canadian automotive history. His organization is scheduled to produce 140,000 new cars, 35,000 more than any previous yearly record.
