FIN ANCIAL, ___THE FEVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D, C. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1928, - SHARP ADVANGES | o vonx BONIDS sroce sscmuvca] | (|JAB PRICES RISE Received by Private Wire Direct to The Star Office N BOND NARKE Dividends and Merger Ru- mors Among Causes of Higher Quotations. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 28.—The higher dividends declared yesterday by several industrials and public utilities and rumors of further combinations in the local public utility field served to- day to advance the convertible bonds of Brooklyn Union Gas, Public Service of New Jersey and Porto Rican Tobacco. Issues that have been recently leading the speculative department of the mar- ket were quieter. Brookiyn Union Gas 5!5s advanced 17 points before midday. Public Service of New Jersey 445 were up nearly 2 points, J. Kayser 5l:s rose 3 points, Liquid Carbonic 6s were 8 points higher on one transaction and Pressed Steel 88 sold to 102, compared with Tuesday's low of 9715. ‘The oil convertibles were {rregular, Colon 6s declined 3 points. This was an exception, for all of the Sinclair issues were higher, as were Transcontinental 6'2s and White Eagle 5'2s. There was less buoyancy in the sugar convertibles, which have had sufficient advance in the past two weeks to warrant a more conservative attitude toward them. Local tractions appeared to be sen- timentally helped by the stirring among the public utilities of the Greater New York area. Brooklyn Manhattan 6s and Interboro 7s were both strong and New York Railway adjustments up a point. Andes Copper 7s and Ana- conda 7Ts were quieter, the one making an early advance of a point which it immediately lost and the other gain- ing 11, points. ‘The 8 per cent renewal rate for call money restricted operations in the high-grade corporation bonds, and in some cases had the effect of reducing prices. In the foreign list the strength of the 6 per cent Argentine bonds was conspicuous, with several of them sell- ing at or above their call prices. The Italian industrial convertibles had a setback amunting to 3 to 4 points. There was again some sign of liquida- tion in Japanese descriptions. Washington Stock Exchange SALES. Pot. HEFFERNAN. toh to The Btar. NEW YORK, November 28.—With every indication of another record so far as volume was concerned the curb market favorites surged upward today. Even before the first half session was over the ticker was more than a half i hour late in recording transactions. ‘The opening advance in Dubilier Con- dentser and Radio was sensational. The stock closed yesterday at 97. It opened on a block of 22,000 shares at 19 to- day, then broke just as quickly to 10, railying several points thereafter. There was no sound reason in the affairs of the company to account for this sud- den dougllng of the market value of the stock. The best that could be said was that the operation represented a squeeze of the short interest, which was thought to be enormous, Another spectacular performer was Oanadian Marconi, which opened on a block of 50,000 shares at a new high of 23 and subsequently crossed 27}y on a record turnover. The persistent demand was a direct response to the recent action of the British govern- ment in turning over to private owner- ship wireless and telegraph companies. Marconi Wireless Telegraph, Ltd. in the same category, also moved forward sharply to a new high above 28 after opening on a block of 10,000 shares at 2574, Another outstanding leader was Elec- iric Bond & Share Securities, which jumped from the previous, final of 1541; to 163, also a record top. American & Foreign Power and United Light & Power “A” were other featurss in the utility group also making fresh peaks. Baltimore Markets Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md, November 28. COTTON PRICES FIRM IN EARLY TRADING Market Shows SIight_Decline Un- der Pre-Holiday Realizing Sales. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 28—The Cotton Market opened steady at a de- cline of 2 to 10 points under further pre-holiday realizing and some Southe ern or local selling promoted by relatively easy Liverpool cables. Jan- uary sold off to 2043, making a de- cline of about 40 points from yester- day’s high price and of 10 points from vesterday’s close, but this reaction seem- ed sufficient to bring in a renewal of Wall Street and comission house buy- ing, which absorbed the early offerings. By the end of the first half hour January had rallled to 20.60 with the general list showing net gains of about 6 to 8§ points. Private cables report- ed London, local and continental liqui- dation with a lack of speculative offtake in Liverpool, but prices there firmed up right after the local opening. Re- ports from Manchester said that home trade in cotton goods was improving and that there were increased sales of cotton yarns. PARIS BOURSE PRICES. ANGELL MACHINE PLANT IS PURCHASED BY FORD Auto Magnate’s Latest Acquisition Proves Puzzling to Provi- dence Residents. By the Associated Press. PROVIDENCE, R. I, November 28.— Henry Ford has purchased the general machine plant of Charles E. Angell, A| located here. ‘When Mr. Ford arrived in Providence last August, he said the purpose of his visit was to find “a part for an old en« He was particularly interested in Armington and Sims engines and * | Edison generators. He found these parts in the old ma- chine plant of which Mr. Angell has been the proprietor for the last 40 years. Two carloads of the parts have been shipped to Dearborn, Mich., and six more more carloads will follow soon. Just what the automobile manu- facturer intends to do with the latest acquisition could not be learned today, although Mr. Angell knows, he refuses to tell. —_— VELIE ENDS CAR MAKING. Company to Build Airplanes and Airplane Motors, NEW YORK, November 28 (#)— Permanent discontinuance of manu- facture of the Velie automobile was an- nounced today by W. L. Velle, jr., vice president of the Velie Motors Corpora- tion of Moline, Ill. Wall Street understands the company will confine its activities to the manu- facture of airplanes and airplane motors, with the possibility that it will be drawn into a corporation now being formed through merger of smaller air- plane units. ‘W. L. Velie, president of the company and one of the pioneers in the industry, died last month. R T S There is a penny lunch—cup soup, cup of cocoa, crackers or cake—in only one public school in Philadelphia, | Corn started un- changed to 1, off and subsequently | scored something of an advance all around. Oats followed corn. Provisions were steady. News that beneficial downpours had taken place in southern Argentina, where the crops have been suffering on account of excessive heat and urgent need of was more or less offset to day in the wheat market here by com- rehensive advices that there is much less wheat in United States country elevators that at this time last year. It was indicated that the movement to rimary centers has been 20,000,000 E\lshels ahead of last year, and that most of this come from Winter wheat production over 1927. Prices for all grades of domestic wheat in practically all markets it was shown, are lower than at this time last year, in this connection, the assertion was made that farmers generally are in better flnancial condition than they were and that the “hold your wheat,” movement advocated by Secretary Jar- dine is likely to keep the grain on farms until prices improve or money is needed for Spring work. STOCK PRICES INCREASED BY PUBLICITY MEDIUM Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 28.—That publicity affects the price of a stock has been proven beyond a doubt. In order to create public interest it is just as necessary to : dvertise a company’s stock as to advertise a company’s product. Companies whose stocks are listed on the New York Stock Exchange get a great deal of free publicity, for each day fairly complete records of transac- tions are published in about 500 news- papers trFroughout the country and about 500 additional newspapers carry occasional or partial reports. Such incidental publicity as this is immensely valuable, but, of course, in quotation tables one stock is not em- phasized more than another. Only by spectacular movements of its stock or by the announcement of unusual facts about a company is it possible to get specfal publicity in the form of news articles or special mention in financial columns. Progressive companies have found it to their advantage to get all such publicity possible. Since many potential investors never see the financial pages, news concerning a particular company or industry in an- other section of the paper is particular- ly helpful in creating public interest. Although this is quite common, it is difficult to obtain and in great demand. One of the most outstanding examples of the effect of such publicity is demonstrated in the case of the avia- tion stocks. While for many years public interest in_cviation has gained steadily, it took Lindbergh's flight to Paris to really kindle great public in- terest in the industry. The morning after Lindbergh landed newspapers de- voted pages to the flight. From that day aviation has increased in popularity until many believe now that the in- dustry will follow the course of mass production taken by the automobile industry. —_—te EARNINGS DECREASE, BUT DIVIDENDS GAIN By the Associafdd Press. Statistics on the sources of the Na- tion’s income in 1927, as compiled by the Treasury Department from income tax returns, disclose a falling off in ends. While the total business income was 90 * | only about $40,000,000 less in 1927 than in 1926, it amounted to only 13.52 per cent of the total income, as compared to 14.04 per cent in/1926. Dividends, however, totaled about $140,000,000 more- in 1927 than in 1926, representing 15.93 r;{l .«:.ent of the total, as compared to The drop in business income probably reflects the marked depression in indus- try, which came in the Fall of 1927.
