Charles E. Howe, treasurer of tHe American Security & Tust Co., holds an enviable record among Washington bankers in that he is now rounding out 35 years' service with the same institution. One of the foremost bank- ers in the city, Mr. Howe has held his present position as treasurer for the post 18 years, during which, period the bank has made rapid strides. /Mr. Howe is a native of Miffiintown, Pa,, and began his career in that place as a general bank messenger where he did everything from looking after the fire in_the' Winter to acting as paying teller, bockkeeper, note teller and oftcn serving as cashier. And it is interest- ing to note that he started to climb the financial ladder under the guidance of E. P. A change in the dates of the 1929 tion at San Francisco to September 30, October 1-3, in place of the original dates of October 14 to 17, is announced by F. N. Shepherd, executive manager’ of the organization. The original dates were set to avoid conflicts with other previously scheduled local events at San Francisco, but a satisfactory ar- rangement has been worked out and the new convention dates will permit the delegates to the American Bankers' Association meeting to avail themselves of the more favorable Summer tourist railroad rates for which the ticket-pur- chasing period regularly remains open until September 30 each year. Reserve Bank’s Action Pleasing. Local bankers who are personally acquainted with George L. Harrison, Jjust appointed governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, are greatly pl'nsed with his selection. He has been wZh the Federal Reserve system since its organization in 1914. He prepared for college at Western High School in this city, graduated from Yale in 1910 and Harvard Law Schoo! in 1914. Following his graduation from law school, Mr. Harrison served for a year as legal secretary to Justice Oliver ‘Wendell Holmes of the United States Supreme Court, and his first position with the Reserve Board was as assist- ant counsel. C, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 19%. 0 ™ | Worth Pump(B) / 60 STOCKS ARE FIRM IN PROFIT-TAKING Market Recedes Slightly Aft- er Active and Higher Opening Prices. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star.’ NEW YORK, November 26.—Accumu- lated buying orders over ‘the weck end put prices on the Stock Exchange sharp- ly higher at the start, but a good share of the gain was canceled in the later trading, when selling was heavy. For the most part the offerings were well absorbed and there was no real change in _the character of the mariet. ‘There were numerous features at the opening. Among them was Consolidated Gas, the first sale of which was 15,500 shares at 987, up 3% points and at a new high for the present stock. An- other was Andes Copper, the first sale in which was 10,000, shares at 56, up over 4 points, and also at a new hign since listing. Victor - Talking Machine went forward spectacularly with a gain of almost 10 points added to its large gain of Priday. J Even more sensational was the open- ing in International Nickel. The stock had closed Friday at 203. The first sale today was 6,000 shares at 215, up 12 points. Associated Goods jumped almost 5 points, making a new 1928 top. After the early buying orders had been filled there followed a period of profit-taking under the weight of which prices came off without, however, un- covering any weakness. General Motors, up fractionally at the start, sold down a couple of points. U. S. Steel, up more than two points on .the first sale, lost about half of its gain. The feature of the steel stocks today was Bethlehem, crossing 84 to a new high. In the au- tomobile group Willys-Overland was bought on reports of a stock dividend, Hupp gained moderately, while Stewart ‘Warner was the leader of the accessol division. . A number of the utilities moved sym- pathetically with Consolidated Gas. Co- lumbia Gas was up some 2 points above 132 and not far from its extreme high. International Telephone and Tele- graph, Western Union and American Telephone. were higher. plat eyt i oo SO Sees Gain in Rubber Sales. NEW YORK, November 26 (#).— ;reskld}ezmh g’.
