THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. (. TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 20, 1928, MiLADY BEAUTIFUL- BY LOI 0Oily Skin. Dear Miss Leeds: Every morning when I arise my skin is very greasy. I have an olive complexion. How can I prevent the oiliness?>—A. I. C. Answer—I could help you more if you had told me what kind of care you are giving your skin and what you eat. A certain’ amount of natural ofl in the skin is helpful, as it keeps the skin young. It a mistake to try to make the skin dry. Use plenty of soap and warm wates time. Lather and rinse twice before the final rinse in cold water. Dry the skin and pat on an astringent lotion such as witch hazel. Take a_warm cleansing bath every night. In the morning_take a cold or tepid sponge bath, followed by a hard rubdown with a coarse, dry towel. Avoid all foods that are fried, especially those fried in deep fat. Take lean instcad of fat meats. Dc not butter your bread too thickly or use too much mayonnaise dressing. In the morning bathe your face in cold water, dry and pat on an astringent lotion before powdering. LOIS LEEDS. Healthy But Not Fat. Dear Miss Leeds: I am very athletic | and want to be healthy but not fat. BEDTIME STORIES "~ At the Hollow Tree. Think quickly, and as aquickly act, But do it with the greatest tact. —Old Mother Nature. Rusty the Fox Squirrel had been | trapped in a hollow tree. He had gone | into that hollow tree for a nap. He| knew that it had been the home of some one, but he thought it was de- scrted. When he awoke, it was to dis- cover that the rightful owner had come home. The rightful owner sat in the doorway with his tail hanging down— a queer tail without any hair on it. ‘There was no way for Rusty to get out excepting by means of that doorway. ‘What to do! That tail hung tantaliz- ingly just in front of him. Three times Rusty reached up to bite it, but his courage failed. But the fourth time he set his teeth quick and hard on the end of that tail. Things happened then. The owner of that tail, and the tail itself, disap- peared from that doorway as if by magic. Rusty followed the tail. He didn't know who might be waiting for him outside, but he hoped that. if he got outside quickly enough he would be able to escape. So the owner of that tail was barely outside when out popped Rusty. Out popped Rusty and almost thrust his own face into another face— a sharp face that was hissing and snarl- ing and showing a set of the sharpos. looking teeth.® It was a Possum. V=3, sir, it was a Possum, and he was a thoroughly angry Possum. You could hardly blame him. He moved quickly, but Rusty was even quicker. He whirled around to the back side of that tree. He was safe. He knew that no Possum that ever lived could catch him once he had his freedom. So he peeped around the front of the tree at that angry Possum. beg your pardon,” said Rusty, “I didn't mean to.” “Then what did you do it for?” de- manded the Possum, bringing his tail | around so that he could look at the end | of it. “What I mean is,” explained Rusty, “that I didn’t know any one lived in | this house. If I had known you lived here, I wouldn’t have thought of going to sleep in here. In fact, I wouldn’t have gone in at all. I thought it was deserted and so I took a nap in there.” “What's that got to do with biting my tail?” growled the Possum. OUR CHILDREN By Angelo Patri My Mother’s Way. Prissy was a very good child. All her teachers agreed on that. She was neat and careful, her work was always ready -on time, she never foiled in a lesson. | But she had one streak that made the teachers sigh a little. Prissy would view the task before her with critical cye. Should she find something not to her | liking she would say with gentle in- sistence, a vein of steel glittering through her sturdy spirit, “My mother doesn't do_that way.” It was worst in the kitchen. The teacher would make the demonstration, give the recipe, discuss the processes. and the class would set to work. All except Prissy. She would stand before | her table looking like a sweet pink and white mule. | | bread. Better'n anybody's. S LEEDS. | T am 17 years old and 5 feet 5 inches tall. T try not to eat candy, ice cream or pastry, and my complexion has im- proved wonderfully since I stopped cat- | ing these sweets. ' Is water fattening? CATHERINE. average weight for height is 124 pounds. Answer—The your age and | think that 134 pounds would not be {too heavy for vou. Do not take any | reducing_drugs, as they are dangerous when effective. I do not think the bath tablets would help you at all. If | | you are over 134 pounds, consult a doc- | tor about reducing. but do not try to | | lose weight without medical advice, If | your figure is firm and well set up I see | no reason for wearing a_corset, but I think you should wear a light girdle to | hold up your stockings. Round garters | are bad for the circulation of blood in the legs. Water is not fattening. Drink |six or eight glassfuls | meals. | fluous hair on my upper lip. I have | | used peroxide alone and also with | | lemon without result. How can I bleach | | these hairs? (2) I am 15'a years |old, 5 feet 3 inches tall and weigh 124 | pounds. I have a naturally large build | How can I reduce? | | ANXIOUS RITA. | Answer—(1) Try using a_mixture | of three parts peroxide and 1 part of | | ammonia. Pat this on the hairs once a day until they begin to be bleached, | then usc it less frequently. Your fail- | ure to get results is probably due to your not keeping up the applications | | every single day. (2) You arc a few | | pounds over the average in weight, | but a girl of your age should not try | to reduce except under a_doctor's or- ders. LOIS LEEDS. I'm sorry I had to do it, but there was no other | way. Don't you see that?" “No,” growled the Possum, “Ah don't | see that. When I sit up to eat, it shuts off the wind. When I curl it around me for a nap, it keeps me warm. So, you see, mine is a very useful tail. But I can't see what use a tail like yours is. .
