Special Dispatch to The Stur. NEW YORK, November 20.— Eclipsing | 1l previous performancas, specuiation on the New York Stock Exchange to- day presented the most amazirig spec- tacle yet witnessed in all this great bull market. Not only were the advaaces violent beyond all precedent, but the tacilities for trading were hopelessly swamped. Up uniil 1 o'clock there had been re- corded on the tape sales of 2,785,200 shares, but as a matter of fact ai noon on the floor the actual trading had ex- which, if kept up, would mean a total of 17,500,000 shares. In midafternoon the tape was 95 minutes late. Up until today the record for volume was 6,733,500 shares, made on last Friday. Radio was again the star performer. It rose by leaps and bounds. It had jumped 30 points net Monday. Today selling in_ the fourch hour at 368 it was up 36!2 points more. Apparently there was no limit to the price unfor- tunate shorts had to pay. Gains Are Striking. ‘There were numerous other striking gains. Wright Aeronautical at 218 was up 11 points. Curtis Aero at 147% was up 9 poinis. Greene Cananea above 174 was up 8 points. Nor were these excezptional. More or less the majority of industrials participated. When profit-taking brought minor re- actions in this part of the list, specu- lation would shift to the rails anc thesz would bz whirled upward. Until the President-elect decided on this tour most Americans, not connect- ed with South American business and trade, never stopped to realize its rowing importance in American trade. In 1912, just two years before the World War, America haa approximately $183,000,000 invested in all South America. Just 16 rs_later—at the beginning of 1928—the figure had in- creased twelvefold and stooC at $2,215,- 000,000. When the total investments in South America are recorded for this year the figure should stand at not less than $2,500,000,000. During the same time United States trade annually with South America has pushed ahead from $328,000,000 to $959,000,000. However, South America still sells more to the United States than the United States sells to South America. But the spread is narrowing. In trade expansion with the United States Colombia leads, Venezuela next, than Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Chile and Brazil, in the order named. Bolivia and Paraguay also have moved ahead rapidly. In number of American investments in South America Chile holds first place with approximately $520,000,000, then Argentina, $484,000,000; Brazil, $447.- 000,000; Colombia, $211,000,000; Vene- zuela, $172,000,000; Peru. $150,000.000. Other South American republics have recelved additional millions, all invested during the last few years. From the standpoint of American business in South America, important trip has been undertaken by any President than the one Herbert | Hoover started yesterday. —e | = st Machine Tool Demand. no more | AL Mortgage Money Loaned At Low Interest Rates " Tyler & Rutherford Representing Matnal Benefit Life Ins. Many other stocks lost a part of the early afternoon advance, but were still much up on the dag. Radio at 352 was down 16 points from its best, but over 20 points from the preceding close. The i turmoil on the floor was just as great and excitement in the brokerage offices just as intense. ‘The market started in strong with all the active stocks scoring gains. There were, of course, dssues which did not, participate, but even they did not sell off. On the other hand, the gains were extreme. For example, Du Pont, which had closed at 440, before noon was selling at 480, up 40 points; Case ‘Threshing Machine, which had closed at 449, was ulling at 479, up 30 point: and Radio, which performed so spac. tacularly at the close on the day beiore, had gone from 331}, to 355 for a gain of 23%; points. not by any means so spectacular, was the rise in Standard Oil of California. Normally this is a sedate stock. There are 12,594,098 shares outstanding, cer- tainly enough to go around. It closed {esterdny at 69'. Starting in slowly, it galned momentum during the first efore noon, high for the slock of the present com- pany. Then there was urgent bidding for the railroad stocks. The featurs was Northern Pacific, which ran up to 116. This was the highest price since 1916, when the siock was paying 7 per cent. Great. Northern certiiicates went along, coming close to parity with the unde- posited stock. Although it has been said that no change would be made in the dividend rate by either of these roads prior to a decision by the Inter- state Commerce Commission on the merger application, the Street today seemed to believe that soms important development was pending. Rail Shares. New York Central, Canadian Pacific, Nickel Plate and Union Pacific were other high-grade rails in favor. In the lower priced list Western Maryland jumped 5 points, Erie responded to its very favorable October earnings state- iment and Kansas City Southern swept ahead into new high ground. The copper stocks were still centers of interest. Anaconda was the leader, an insistent demand forcing the price above 114 to a new all-time high.. Chile Copper made the same kind of record above 72 and new highs were estab- lished by Magma and Greene Cananea. The last named at 172 was up almost 9 points. Most of the steels and most of the motors were little changed in the early trading. Republic Iron & Steel was an exception, with a rise of 4 points to a new top. There was further selling of Interboro stock on the postponement of ;.geccmon at Washington on the 7-cent Money renewed at 6% per cent, and was only in fair supply. The tape fell 42 minutes behind, which was not a bad ‘showing considering the apparent activity of the market.
