Dr. ropean of Congress William Dawson Johnston, Eu- representative of the rary and an internationally known bibliographer, died in Sibley Hos- pital yesterday morning. Funeral serv- ices were conducted at Hines' undertak- ing parlors today. Dr. Johnston was born in Essex Cen- ter, Vt, in 1871, and was graduated from Brown University in 1893. He later studied at the University of Chi- cago and afterward at Harvard, from which he received a master's degree. From 1894 to 1897 he was an instructor of history at the University of Michi- gan, and from 1897 to 1899 he held a simtlar position at Brown. From the pursuit of history he was led into the field of bibliography, which became a lifelong passion. Although he neld various administrative posi- tions, including the librarianship of | Columbia University and that of the St. | Paul Public Library, his greatest inter- | | | | several years he was lecturer on the subject at Simmons College. In 1911 Rutgers College conferred upon him the degree of Litt. D. From 1921 to 1925 he was librarian of the American Library in Paris, which position he relinquished to become Eu- ropean representative of the Library of Congress, with which he had been earlier associated. He was temporarily in this country engaged on an impor- tant bibliographical project of the li- brary at the time of his death. Dr. Johnston's contributions to pro- fessional journals were numerous. In 1904, he published a History of the Li- brary of Congre: covering the early period to 1865. It was the result of prodigious research, and is considered an invaluable source-book for the his- tory of the institution. On July 12, 1895, he married Miss Jean McVicker Browne of Montreal. He is survived by his widow and two daugh- ters, Mrs, Dorothy Blake of Honolulu and Mrs. Nancy Weissblatt, of Phila- delphia. Dr. Johnston was a former president of the District of Columbia Library As- sociation. WILL SHOW HOSPITALITY. South to Take Into Homes for Entertainment. BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
