NEW YORK, November 19.—A sen- sational advance in Radlo in the last half hour of today's stock market ses- sion was the signal for a rally which ended a day of irregular and uncertain price movements. Radio, which had fluctuated around the preceding close in the earlier trad- ing, suddenly jumped to a new high, with 323 bid 20 minutes before the end. Other strong features were Anaconda, May Department Stores, a few of the rails and some of the oils. Most of the day the selling predominated, but the declines never went very far. It was evident that the appetite of the out- side public for stocks had not been appeased, and it was equally plain that professionals were realizing in large volume. The opening showed more losses than alvances, but there was the usuall sprinkling of new highs. This was because the “rise in rates dur- ing the past year has been larger for loans on the Stock Exchange than for other open market loans, while the advance in rates charged to commer- cial customers has been still smaller.” “The present high level of money rates,” the bulletin declared, “reflects the combined effect on the money mar- ket of a large loss of gold and of a firm money policy by the Reserve banks during a period in which the voludme of bank credit continued to ex- pan Park Savings Declares Extra. ‘The directors of the Park Savings Bank have declare of 5 per cent, accl ment by Robert S. Most of them were in the oil or rail groups. Shell Union set a new high for the year at 38, and New Haven | was in active demand up over two oints. Pennsylvania did better for a time. All these, however, were excep- tions. Most active stocks were in sup- ly and gave way. p;’l‘here was nothing new in the out- liquidation. Money renewed at 62 per cent, the banks called loans and funds were not in especially good supply, but that has happened many times before witiout influencing the market in the slightest. There was nothing unfavor able in the trade news. The only differ- ence was in the emphasis placed on the need for caution, even in quarters | which had been most optimistic dur- ing the long rise. ‘The selling affected the motors most. Chrysler dropped 2 to 3 points. Nash sold off about as much and more easily. General Motors was down & point or so and Hudson was lower. Mack Trucks, on the other hand, was actively bought around the high of the movement. Among general industrials Sears Roe- buck, Westinghouse Electric, Vanadium, National Bellas Hess, General Electric and stocks of that caliber declined 2 to 3 points, not a large loss considering the extent of the rise and not one in itself to arouse any apprehension. United States Steel dipped below 170, against its recent high (‘111 172%,. Bethlehem was | better supported. Some cl}pthe utilities reacted with the | rest of the list. They included North American and Columbia Gas. On the other hand, American Telephone & | Telegraph sold higher, responding to the argument that it was far behind other investment stocks of equal merit. Sales ran at the rate of over a mil- lion an hour and although not quite up to the record-breaking days of last week, | the tape was 35 minutes late at noon. ige CRAbn Montgomery Ward Stock Increase.
