BYRD'S FLAGSHIP 15 NEARING TAHIT First Land Sighted in Voy- age Across Pacific on Way to Antarctic. By Wireless to The Star and New York Times. ON BOARD THE S. S. ELEANOR BOLLING, at Sea, October 29.—The Eleanor Bolling, flagship of the Byrd Antartic xpedition, passed the north- ernmost Disappointment Island, the Coral Islands of the Tuomatu Archi- pelago, at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, | 19_days out of Balboa. It was the first land sighted on the 4,000 mile voyage across the Pacific. The Bolling is due at Papete, on the ‘Tuesday night or taking on water, she will proceed to Wellington, New Zealand, where she will take on some of the cargo to be left there by the whaler C. A. Larsen, now bearing Comdr. Richard E. Byrd and the aviation personnel southward. Dunedin. New Zealand, where addi- tional supplies await the Antarctic fleet, will be the Bolling's last stop in civilized territory. The supply ship has made better time than had been anticipated, due to the fact that Capt. Gustave V. Brown hoisted sails a few days out of | Balboa and rode the trade winds to the South Pacific. The ship passed 5 miles to the south of Disappoint- ment Island, but members of the crew were unable to see any signs of life on shore. The island is inhabited by less than 200 natives, members of one of the most primitive tribes on the Pacific islands. Aside from the ship’s routine there was little activity on board today. At the start of the trip Capt. Brown decided that there should be no un- necessary work on Sundays. The holi- day was welcome today, as all membres of the crew had spent the entire day yesterday disposing of 50 tons of re- serve coal, which had been stored in the forehold and which had to be transshipped to the coal bunkers be- fore it could be fed to the boiler. Wireless dispatches to the New York Times yesterday from ships of the Byrd Antartic expedition gave their posi- tions at noon as follows: The steam- ship Eleanor Bolling was in latitude 14:20 south, longituds 141:44 west, and her run for the preceding 24 hours was 205 miles. The Bark City of New York was in hmaxde 13:41 south, longitude 140:01 wes (Copyright, 1928, by New York Times Co. and St. Louis Post Dispatch.
