Willard Smith, the druggist who was slain in a hold-up on October 16, fired at his assailant just before collapsing from a mortal wound. . Senator Overman is now the second ranking Democrat in the United States Senate, standing third among the Sen- ators of both parties in point of time service. His first term began March 4, 1903. A fifth consecutive term was started in 1927, so that he has served in the Senate for over a quarter of a cen- ury. ‘While the Democrats were in power he was chairman of the rules com- mittee, acting chairman of the judiciary committee and ranking member of the appropriations committee. For his work in assisting the passage of wartime legislation President Wilson wrote to Senator Overman: “It is admirable the way you have been handling these important bills, and I thank you with all my heart for stand- ing by the bill which bears your name without any compromise of any kind.
