NEW YORK, October 18.—The firmer | tone and the increasing interest in bonds which were evident vesterday continued today in those parts of the market that take their cue from money onditions. ‘There has been a gharp ivision rocently hetween the Inost- ment_and the speculative groups of ponds, with the large volume of trad- ing in the latter, Present indications are that this difference will not be so0 great from now on. Not only were high-grade railroad and public utility and United States Government issues firmer, the Treas- ury 3%s being up 'e. but there was considerable activity at higher prices in 4 number of the new 4!, per cent | rails, such as Frisco, Wabash, Missouri, Kansas, Texas and Rock Island. The | St. Paul 4’5 were also in better de- mand, along with the strength in the | twn issues of 55, Erie refunding 5s and | Western Maryland 6s had fractional | gains, | The convertible list waz nof so active mor o stronz as it has been. Andes | Copper 7s were off a point at one time | although Anaconda Copper 7s were 11 | points higher. Golon Oil 6s, which had | 2 rise Wecnesday of 5 points, lost half of this today. Liquid Carbonic 65| gained 3 points, Remington Rand 5.5 fained 1!, points and Dodge 6s moved between 10414 and 1043, Local traction bonds were distinctly heavy, especially the Interboro 5s and New York Railway 6. Special Dispatcn to The Star. | NEW YORK, October 18 —Unbridled speculative enthuslasm, coupled with an apparent unlimited ~ buying power, caused excited upbidding of selected favorites on the Curb Market today. Words of warning, coming from the more conservative_element, passed un- heeded as they have all during thel present unprecedented campaign for the rise. The customary new high records were Yields, current dividend returns and earnings were not factors in the speculative cal- culations. The line of least resistance still lay on the buying sid Radio issues played a more prominent part in the proceedings. IN INITIAL TRADES Market Shows Advance of One to| Decline of Eight Points. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 18.—The cot- ton market opened today steady at an advance of 1 point on July, but gen- erally 4 to 8 points lower under South- emn selling and realizing by recent buyers. ‘The latter was probably pro- moted by the failure of early weather map to show frost in the South and rather easier late cables from Liver- pool. Offerings were readily absorbed recent buying movement, however, and after easing off to 19.74 at the start December advanced to 19.90 by the end of the first half hour or.7 points net higher and 3 points above the best price of yesterday. NEW YORK, October 18.—When the | packing companies close their fiscal year two weeks from today, there is no doubt they will show profits 10 to 25 per cent higher than in the 1927 fiscal period. Figures already compiled as- sure this result. The cattle and hog raisers will show profits almost equally encouraging in most cases. The fact that the outlook | for the swine industry of the country is favorable is about the best news the farmers of the Nation could have. For it is through hogs that the farmer gets the fullest value from his corn crop, the most impoitant crop grown in the United States from a money value viewpoint. Corn is wealth, and it is now certain that the farmers will have a lot of it this vear. 3 In recent months hog prices showed a falling off, but this was a development to be looked for at that time. The De- partment of Agriculture estimates that the Spring pig crop this year was 7 per cent smaller than the previous year. This means the supply of animals avail- able for market next Spring will be smaller than in the previous season. There is every reason to believe, on the other hand., that both domestic and foreign demand for pork and pork . Euro- PEAn CONSWMES are More prosperous and more American food products are going into consumption. Storage stocks of pork and pork products have been sharply reduced. There still exists a slight oversupply of lard. but its position is rapidly strengthening. are about normal. This. coupled with the fact that mar- ketings seem likely to be ample without, being excessive, provides a condition favorable to stability for the industry and profits for the farmer. The corn crop is large, but the rela- tionship of corn prices to pork prices is favorable to the farmer. Moreover there was some scarcity of corn in certain sections earlier in the year and some of the Spring pig crop is being “finished” on new corn. The favor- able feed and price situation undoubted- ly will stimulate breeding operations, but the supply of animals so augment- ed will not be ready for market after the middle of 1929. supply of wheat last month increased | 84,551,000 bushels, against 32,073,000 | bushels increase for the month last| year. | On the other hand, reports were cur- | rent today to the effect that domestic flour trade shows improvement, and | that buying of wheat for mills is tend- | | ing to give a steady tone to the market for cash wheat.
