o WENCAN RELATE | BACKS PORTES G Bishop De la Mora Confident New President Will Re- lieve Catholics. By the Associated Press. MEXICO CITY, October 3.—Speaking without the authority of other prelates, Bishop Miguel de la Mora of San Luis Potosi has addressed an open letter to President-elect Portes Gil expressing confidence that he may relieve the dis- tressing condition of the Mexican Catholics by enforcing the religious law \x‘-nhout resorting to punishment or rigor. The bishop said that thus Portes Gil would support new policies outlined by President Calles in his recent message to Congress, in which he “opened new horizons in our political life and gave riss to hopes of a prosperous Mexico, the sons of which would b2 linked by fraternal bonds in an atmosphere of liberty for all lawful inclinations and honest ambitions.” After defining the words “private” and “public,” the bishop concluded that the constitution did not forbid the practice of religlous services within homes because they are private, and that neither were householders liable to arrest and punishment because they in- vited friends to attend such services. Consequently he asked that Catholies throughout the country be allowed to have priests conduct religious services within the homes. ‘The bishop appealed to the president- clect to give serious consideration to a “sincere and respectful petition on behalf of concord and harmony in the Mexican family and to relieve the dis- tressing situation of the Mexican Catholics.” NEWS OF ANTI-SOVIET ALLIANCE IS DOUBTED :Report That Poland, Greece and Rumania Have United Are Received Skeptically. By the Associated Press. LONDON, October 3—Reports cur- Tent in Bucharest that Poland, Ru- mania and Greece have concluded a military alliance to make common front against Russia in the event of wer are received with considerable skepticism in British official circles, It was stated yesterday that the pro- gram of Premier Venizelos of Greece, who has been concluding various agree- ments with neighboring countries, does not include Poland; that Greece has no common interests in Poland, as their borders do not touch, and that Greece would not be interested in an alliance against Russia, since their interests are not antagonistic. It is believed here that Poland and Rumania already have an alliance, but that it is not militarily directed against Russia. —_— DENY DE LA HUERTA AID. Mexican Re-Electionists Fail to Name Presidential Nominee. MEXICO CITY, October 2 (#).—Vito Alessio Robles announced yesterday that until a convention designated a presi- dential nominee the anti-re-electionist party would support no one. He denied & rumor that the party was supporting Adolfo de la Huerta, former Provisional President, who has been living in exile in Los Angeles. He said de la Huerta had not ex- pressed any presidential ambitions, but that the exile's friends were at liberty to propose him as a candidate during the convention, which might or might not nominate him. 14 NUNS ARRESTED.
