LISF OF CIGARETTES GROWS BY LEAPS Displaces Pipe in England, Economic Committee Survey Shows. LONDON (#).—Cigarette smoking the world over has shown a big in- crease during the last year. In England it is steadily ousting the pipe_from the favor of smokers. Even In Germany, where pipe tobacco still oredominates, a marked increase in the sonsumption of cigarettes has taken olace. The imperial economic committee, wvhich has been making a survey of the situation, points out that in India the annual consumption of cigarettes is now about 6,500,000,000 as compared with an annual figure of somewhat inder 1,000,000,000 before the war. The igarette is thus at present advancing in world-wide favor, but the consumption per head appears to be highest in the United Kingdom. “The evidence we have received from trade sources,” the committee reports, “is to the effect that the trend to THE EVENING STAR. Throughout Europe con- sumption now inclines toward cigarettes and the milder varieties of pipe tobaccos. In the United States, pipe and chew- ing tobacco still is the greater part of the consumption, but the proportion of cigorettes is increasing. It is estimated that the total produc- tion of tobacco in the world in 1926 was 4,900,000,000 tons, of which the United States and the British Empire provided approximately one-half. Between 1920 and 1924 the con- sumption of empire tobacco expanded at a rate of 1,650,000 pounds a year, and between 1924 and 1927 at a rate of 3,200,000 pounds a year. Russia Spares Rod.
