FIN BONDS INDIFFERENT 10 EASY MONEY Gradual Slowing Down of Convertibles Finds General List Lower at Week End. BY CHABLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 28—If it were likely that today's 6 per cent re- newal rate for money would continue well into October, more response would have been given by bond prices to what was regarded as only a temporary easing in the rate. Aside from a few scattered transactions in United States Govern- ment issues, the high grade list today was indifferent to the money situation, and on the average was lower at the end of the week. There has been a gradual slowing Sown in the trading in convertible issues. Andes Copper 7s today were about a point higher at one time, and Anaconda Copper 7s slightly above vesterday's closing. Public Service of New Jersey 4.5 rose 1'; points, but Barnsdall 6s and Tennessee Copper 6s were both lower. Small losses occurred in the active industrial mortgages, such as Good- year 5s and United States Rubber 5s. Pressed Steel Car 5s rallied a point after dropping late yesterday from 100 to 98. Eastern Cuba Sugar 7s were at a new low for the year and 14 points under the year's highest. Fractional declines occured in & majority of the Jower grade rails, although the volume of trading in them was too small to suggest a definite trend. Fonda, Johns- town and Gloversville 4'.s broke below 40 for the first time, The recent liqui: dation in them has been significant of pending events. The issue of $10,000.000 Finland Mortgage Bank 6s had the effect of causing a moderate amount of read- justment in the prices of other Finaish bonds. The foreign list in general was dull and unmovable. Investors are confused by the wide range of yields that obtains on bonds of the same iype and carrying similar coupon rates. This is especially true throughout the Ger- man group of city and provincial issues. ‘This week's new offerings amounted to $69.000.000. or slightly larger than the week previous. The total for Sep- tember will be between $275,000,000 and $300,000,000. Washington Stock Exchange SALES. Washington Gas 65 1041 5. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 28.—Initial |trading in the new William Filene's Sons Co. preferred and common stock made up the outstanding feature of the curb market overations today. Public offering of the $3,500.000 6'> per cent cumulative preferred and 100,000 shares of the common was made today, with the subscription price of the former fixed at $104.50 a share and the com- mon at $38 a share The preferred immediately sold at a premium of 3's points and the com- mon at a premium of 16 points from the subscription figure. The urgent demand indicated the highly suceessful offering of the issue. Representing one of the principal retail clothing chains of New England, the company's earn- ings have shown consistent growth over a number of years. Other Moves Irregular. The movement of prices elsewhere was highly irregular. New high records were established in Chegker Cab, Co- lumbia Graphophone, Libbey-Owens Co., National Rubber Machinery issues, Wayne Pump and United States Asbes- tos, but the demand was not of the same character as that which had ac- companied operations for the rise in the recent past. It was evident that a good deal of distribution had takea place and that stocks had been passing from strong into weak hands. Some of the oils were in better de- mand, notably Lion Oil and Rv‘l"l'ma selling ex the quartely 50¢ distribution. Rise Is Renewed. Reactionary tendencies which devel- oped late yesterday appeared to have sufficiently ‘corrected the technical mar- ket position of various specialties to warrant renewed operations for the rise today. New high records. were established in Columbia_ Graphophone, up over 4 points; Liberty Owens Co., up ovér a point at 141, and Checker Cab, up a like amount to 63. The independent oil shares came in for more attention, notably Lion Oil & Refining, selling ex the quarterly 50-cent dividend, which was more than earned in the month of | August. It sold at what was virtually a new high, taking into account the 50 cents a share deducted from the price today Bancitaly ~ shares had _another characteristic sharp run-up following announcement of distribution to stock= holders of one share of the capital | stock of Bank of America for each 40 | shares of Bancitaly held. | Markets at a Glance NEW YORK.
