NEW YORK, September 21.—There were many cross movements in the; bond market today, reflecting the high-| money rates on the one hand and speculative enthusiasm on the other as| well as fluctuations affected by the m-, ternal conditions of individual corpora-| tions. The <xtreme rates for money had a pronounced effect on United States! Government issucs. _All of the long-| term Treasury certificates were weak.| Compared with the prices last Saturday they were off !> to 3;. Liberty bonds were also heavy. Some of the high-| grade rails turned downward. Heavy trading occurred in Andes; Copper convertible 7s. Opening with a 2-point advance, they increased this to over 5 points. An active market is being made for these bonds in connec- tion with pool operations that are under way in the stock. Liquid Car-| bonic 6s had a gain of 4 points. Among the strong specinmes ‘were American Natural Gas Pressed Steel 5s, National Dairv 5%5, Certain- | Teed 5'2s and Pathe 7s. Washington Stock Exchange SALES. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 21.—New high records continued to be marked up today on the Curb Exchange, de- spite a hardening tendency in money rates. Among the outstanding features were the stock and convertible bonds of Southern Asbestos Co. Their strength was based on publication of the highly favorable earnings statement for the fiscal year ended June 30. This dis- closed net equivalent to $6.79 a share {on the common stock outstanding as of that date, and compared with $3.14 a share in the preceding year. The rise of almost 20 points in the 6 per cent | bonds was proportionate with the gain of almost 4 points to a new high in the common stock. The newly listed Oakes Products con- vertible preferred A and B moved for- ward sharply. ‘The oil shares as a group moved high- er, under leadership of the refining in- terests. Standard of Indiana, Kentucky, International Petroleum and Imperial of Canada were favored. Opens Trregular. Irregularity characterized early curb operations. The market, however, gave a good account of itself in the face of the hardening tendency of funds avail- able for speculative purposes. New high records were markéd up in Industrial Rayon, which gained 4 points to 134; American Hawaiian Steamship, up almost 2 points; Wayne Pump and A. C. Horn, up a point or so. E. W. Bliss, was subjected to heavy profit-taking following the official de- nial by the president of Niles-Bement- i Pond that a merger of the two proper- ties was under consideration. At the same time Niles-Bement-Pond lost frac- tionally. COTTON IS STEADY, WITH SLIGHT GAIN By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 21.—The cotton market opened steady today at an advance of 4 to 12 points. Active months showed net advances of 6 to 13 points after the call on cover- ing, combined with trade and commis- ston house buying on the relatively firm showing of Liverpool and reports of storm damage to cotton in Georgia and the Carolinas. WHEAT OVERSOLD. Prices Advance More Than Four Cents to Strong Close. CHICAGO, September 21 (P)—Ag- gressive buying which developed toward the last disclosed a heavily oversold condition in the wheat market today. Prices advanced more than 4 cents a bushel from low points touched on an carly decline. Standing orders to buy at various set limits, and thus stop losses on the part of previous speculative sellers, were forced into operation on the advance, which found offerings scarce. There was a notable absence of hedging sales against newly harvested wheat Northwest, although Canadian farm deliveries totaled 8,373- 000 bushels. ‘Wheat closed strong, 3%a3% to 47 net higher, corn varying from % to 13 advance, oats showing % to !> gain and provisions varying from 47 set: back to a rise of 20. Risk Totals Increase NEW YORK, September 21 ().—The Life Insurance Sales Research Bureau, Hartford, Conn., reports $702,275,000 in new ordinary life insurance for August, about $21,000,000 better than in August, 1927.
