28 —_ e = LONG RANGE RADIO ENTERTAINMENT MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1928, Programs prepared by the Associated Press. THLEVSON CENER OF RADID EXHBT Opening of Fair Marked by Discussion of When Public May Expect Sets. BY MARTIN CODEL. NEW YORK, September 17.—Much ‘allyhoo about television marks the opening of the Radio "Norld's Fair here in Madison Square Garden. It is the most_discussed subject in radio circles and the one occasioning most disagree- ment among persons in a position to c gentle- imultaneous will that men transmission of moving images by radio 15 2 perfectly accomplished fact. ‘Where say various authorities disagree is in their predictions regarding when the public may expect reliable television receiving sets on the market Bona-fide experimenters with vision will be explaining their app: and methods during the show here} They range from extreme es to those who sincerely be- ots for the reception of that lieve ection images will be perfected and offcred by this time next year. Radio’s foremost authorities, espe- cially those who have actually been do- ing research into radio vision, have repeatedly cautioned the public not to expect too much too soon from tele- vision. Front-page descriptions of the latest developments in the art of seeing by radio have led to a current conviction | that ail that remains to be done Is to put the televisor, as the device will Pprobably come to be known, into pro- duction. Nothing could be further from the actual state of things. Produce One-Act Play. Moving images in silhouette can be sent quite consistently. Features of in- dividuals have been broadcast and quite clearly delineated in tiny aper- tures on highly complicated recsivers. Two figures fencing and boxing have been brought within focus and repro- duced. voices and images &ct play have bcen demonstrated. But all this was done in the labora- tory. The technical men, each time they have demonstrated something new, have made it clear that they have advanced merely one stage. The most insistent caution against the immediate expectation of market- able television apparatus has come from scientists and experimenters. Visual devices being sold today are mostly designed for use by amateurs and informed technical men, who are making valuable reports on reception results to the broadcasting laboratories. Many amateurs throughout the coun- try are being employed by C. Francis Jenkins, the Washington inventor, in his experiments with what he prefers | to call “radio-vision.” They are, in his words, the “pioneers” of a new art. Mr. Jenkins is one of the best known and most highly respected men in this field. He turnishes data gratis on the building of experimental sots for the| reeseption of al moving images | broadeest from his laboratory in Wash- ington. U:: Is Far Away. A number anticipate that the first | ctul home adaptation of tele-| n will be a set for the reception of motion pictures transs ed from strips of film, since light can be con- cenirated upon films most intensely. Sound movies may be a concomitant stage, for audio reproduction simul- taneously with the visual will be a; relatively simple matter. The time for | receiving actual scenes from a theater or a base ball game is perhaps further away. Still picture transmission by radio is | well developed. Television, however, is in an incepiive stage. It is in about the same state as the automobile of 25 years ago. One authority declares that it is at the same stage of development as radio-telephony before the begin- ming of radio broadcasting. The latter took only a few years to jump into its | present high degree of perfection and | use; some think that television will develop even faster, since the baslc\ principles of photoradio are well understood. Figures more clearly delineated and‘ magnified to larger proportions than at present possible, confinement of the | signals to narrower bands of fre-| quencies and the construction of a smple and foolproof receiver, are a few of the present lacks in the field of television. Certainly no televisor will be marketed on a substantial scale until it is at least as trustworthy and foolproof as the radio receiving set of & half dozen years ago. ‘There was a struggle before the tele- wision people obtained admission to the exhibition floor for the Radio World's Fair. The Radio Manufacturers’ As-| sociation at first opposed their appear- ance on the scene. That organization has constantly been hammering away at the proposition that television hopes should not deter the public from radio buying for fear of immediate obso- lescence of receiving sets. Such is the view generally held in the radio in- dustry. (Cop: ht, 1923, by North American News- paper Alliance.) WESTERN R'AI.LWAYE CITE DECREASES IN EARNINGS Live Stock Rate Inquiry Brings Out Alleged Status of $443,305,000 in Bonds. By the Associated Press CHICAGO, September 17.—The com- plaint that “Western trunk line rail- ways are earning far too little” is made in a brief filed by the railways with the Interstate Commerce Commission in connection with the commission’s investigation of Western live stock Tates. 4 “Since 1917.” says the brief, “$443,- 805.000 in bonds of Western trunk line railways have been stricken from the list of investments that are legal for savings banks in New York State. while during the same period for ali railroads in the remainder of the United States only $5,230,000 of bonds h: been stricken. On same period the par value of bonds added to the legal list in New York State for carriers ouiside Western lines territory has aggregated $726,007.000, /hile no bonds of Western carriers have been added to the list. Twenty-seven Men and Four Wom- en Held in Green Bay, Wis, GREEN BAY, Wis,, September 17 (#) —Twenty-one of Green Bay’s 65 saloons, which comprised one of the wettest spots in Wisconsin, are dark after one of the most extensive raids of Federal agents in the State. Twenty-seven men and four women are in the county jail without bond awaiting arraignment. The raid was carried out by 58 agents from Milwaukee headquarters, under direction of W. Frank Cunningham, Federal prohibition administratos HOOVER SPEEC ON W TONGHT Democrats Also to Broad- cast From Leesburg, Va, Politics dominate the program of WRC tonight with the Democratic and Republican parties represented in the broadcasts. The outstanding political talk will be made by Herbert Hoover, which WRC will broadcast from Newark, N. J., in conjunction with WEAF and a network of 29 other stations. The Republican nominee is scheduled to speak at 7:30 o'clock. The Democratic program will come from Leesburg, Va., where Lewis Nixon of New York, farmerly Tammany leader, is to espouse the candidacy of Gov. Smith. Nixon will speak at a meeting in front of Leesburg's historic court- house, Microphones there will be con- nected direct with the control room of WRC. The program is scheduled to begin at 10 o'clock. In order to broadcast Mr. Hoover's address, WRC was forced to curtail the regular concert of the A. & P. Gypsies to half an hour. The opening of the Radio Industries Exposition in Madison Square Garden tonight also will take “Roxy and his gang” away from the microphone, WRC replacing this attraction with a program by the “Twin Pairs of Harmony” and a con- cert by the Tipicana Orchestra. WRC's principal musical, attraction will be a tabloid version of Verdi's “Aida” which the National Grand Opera Company has chosen to open its 1928-1929 broadcast season. The Gen- eral Motors “family party” will feature the music of the American negro and two of the foremost musicians of that race—J. Rosamond Johnson, baritone, and Taylor Gordon, tenor. The final outdoor concert of the season by the United States Navy Band headlines the program of WMAL. Other musical attractions include the regular weekly period devoted to famous pian- ists and .a concert by the Novelty Trio, composed of Stanley William Bell, baritone; Norman Marceron, saxophone, and Lesfer E.
