STOCKHOLM, September 14.—While 400 guns roared salutes out over the Baltic and squadrons of airplanes circled overhead, King Alfonso of Spain arrived at Stockholm today for a three- day visit. in recognition of the fact that Eu- rope's most affable monarch holds the rank of admiral in the Swedish navy, the royal fleet outdid itself to make a spectacular display as the glistening Tew Spanish cruiser, Principe Alfonso, steamed in through the Archipelago. SEPTEMBER 17, 19283 cruisers in the escort fired rapid broad- sides until every building in the city trembled. King Gustav went aboard the visiting ship in the inner harbor and after a short chat he and King Alfonso pro- ceeded by boat to the royal palace, where a crowd of 40,000 waited. Crack battalions from the Guards, brilliant in full dress, stood at atten- tion as the two lanky monarchs— Gustav, stern-faced, and Alfonso, wear- ing a broad grin—reached land. Alfonso will play the role of host Saturday, when he will be king of Children’s day, the annual festival par- tictpated in by the entire country. He will attend a gala performance of the opera Saturday night and on Sunday will visit points of interest in the city. On Mondgay, accompanied by Field Marshal the Duke of Miranda and Gen. Berenguer, former head of the Spanish | forces in Morocco, he will leave for Hunneberg, in Vestergotland, where he and King Gustav will spend two days hunting elk in the royal preserves. The absence of Gen. Primo d2 Riviera, who at first was expected to accompany the king, indicates that the visit is purely social and reports of a plot to assassinate the premier failed to throw cold water on the festivities. . 2 Miss Margaret Bevan, the lord mayor of Liverpool, who visited Rome in May, was recently invited to visit Valencla, POPE PIUS URGES MORE CONVERSIONS Encyclical Tells Bishops to Seck to Bring Back Greek and Syrian Members in East. By the Assoclated Press. ROME, September 14.—Pope Pius XI yesterday issued an encyclical urging all bishops of the Roman Catholic Church to forward, by every means in their power, the work of bringing back to the Roman fold the Christians who adhere to the Greek, Syrian and other churches of the Near East. This is the third encyclical of the year and paral- leled in theme the first one, which was devoted to Christian unity under the paternal direction of the Vatican. The pontiff implied that the Catho- lic Near East Welfare Assoiation had been responsible for much of the pro- gress in that section of the world. He | gave credit to support which had been given the movement in various countries and especially referred to the generosi- |ty of “a pious gentlel of the Uni | States of American for whom we de YOUTHFUL SMARTNESS Sor HERz0¢ 1.
