The great turbine power plants of the West are very destructive to the fish which pass through them and are killed in large numbers by the rough treatment they encounter. The matter has been one of great concern to the game enthusiasts and the management of the plants. An invention to pre- vent the destruction of fish by turbine wheels has been invented by an en- gineer for a Pacific Coast power and light oonfmy. It consists of two rows of parallel eleetrodes m-ndtd from a wooden framework the water. The rows are four r-ec apart and the electrodes three feet apart. The elec- trodes are at ly the same level near the bed of the stream. An electric fleld set up about the electrodes will reach in equal from the surface of the water to bottom of the stream. Its will taper off in proportion to the upstream and downstream from the center of the fleld. The device is so constructed that when a fish approaches a talrace it will swim into the edge of the electric fleld and either be immediately turned back or, if it attempts to enter the field farther, a still greater shock will be sufficient %o discourage this procedure.
