REAL ESTATE: STAR MODEL HOME ATTRAGTS MANY Shepherd Park House Exhibit Enters Fourth Week. The Star model home at the corner of Morningside drive street, Shepherd Park, will enter its fourth week of public exhibition under the sponsorship of The Star and the Home Owners’ Institute. The house will be open daily through- out the week from 10 am. to 9 pm. It can be reached by driving out Six- teenth street, turning half right into Alaska avenue, then left into Morning- | the house, marking a new phase in its | studio and bath on the third floor. side drive to Juniper street. This house, the second of the series of four 1928 Star model homes, is built in the shape of an “L" which allows sunshine, light and air to every room from the basement to the attic. The room arrangement allows "for com- pactness, the elimination of any waste space and also for spaciousness, of which the living room (combined with a semi-circular sunroom) and dining room are the most prominent on the | first floor. Careful study was given the detailed entrance to carry out the Eng- lish type of construction. The interior walls and ceilings of the Hving room, hall and dining room are finished in a hard-wall plaster but, con- | trary to the general belief, these walls are smooth. The hard-wall finish is applied in a plastic state, tooled in- dentations are made and the surface troweled smooth. over which four coats of paint have been applied, making a permanent dust-proof wall, which can be cleaned by scrubbing with soap and water or with a vacuum cleaner. The walls of the den over the garage arc of similar construction. ‘The bedrooms are so designed as to allow cross-ventilation, each having a direct opening to a bath of beautiful colored tile and all modern bath acces- gories. A lavatory is on the first floor. ‘The bedrooms are so planned as to al- low adequate wall space for furniture arrangement. The imported wall papers of the rooms are of a bright, cheery design. The large two-car garage, with its Nght collapsible doors, is attached to the house and reached by an easy. con- venient driveway from the street, making the most modern and accessible approach to a garage and eliminating backing and uscless turning. PLANS APPROVED. Archit " Advisory Council Passes on Seven Buildings. The architects’ advisory council at its session Thursday in the office of Maj. Donald A. Davison, Assistant En- gineer Commissioner, approved the de- signs for seven dwellings. Plans were approved as follows: A dwelling to be erected at 4915 Thirtieth lace, designed by Harvey Warwick; our dwellings, 3850-56 Beecher street. designed by George T. Santmyers, an. two dwellings, 3811-13 Upton street, de- signed by E. S. Beall, jr. The jury for the week was composed and Juniper | | story rear porch at the left side of the | building. While more than a month remains before the formal opening of The Star model home at 4422 Q street, in Foxhall Village, which is to take place October 14, this interesting English group dwell- | ing now is nearing the completion of its | construction, leaving ample_time for | | close attention to its finishing, land- | scaping of its grounds and the furnish- |ing and decoration of the house. | | Carpenters this week started laying | | the finish flgoring on all three floors of | steady progress. The flooring for the first and second floors is of a speciai | grade of clear oak, which will give a | rich tone to the rooms. The flooring on the third floor is of high-grade white pine. The rough texture sand-finish walls of the first and third floor rooms have been given a light tan finish, which | | tones in well with the color of the | floors and other decorative effects planned for the house. The walls of the second floor, for the sake of differ- entation, are of white plaster finish. Garage Is Feature | Construction of the double garage at | the rear of the lot, which was started recently, now also is in an advanced stage. From the rear of the house, the garage gives the appearance of a three- in-one garage, the wall on this side | being carried over to the right side of | the yard. In this extended wall is being | constructed an arched gateway to the | alley. | Thus the lawn and garden between {the hcuse and the garage will be shielded from the alley and have an air of privacy. This garden as well as the front yard will be carefully landscaped in keeping with the English character of the house. While details of the landscaping plan hhve not been completed to date, it is likely the builders, Boss & Phelps, will place barberry bushes along brick walls of the house and garage. English box- bushes and a Lombardy poplar or.two also may be added to give height to the landscaping. In the rear yard the plant- ings likely will include gladioli, scarlet sage, arborvitae, weigelia, spirea and others which will add to the color scheme and general pleasing effect. Has Two-Story Porch. A feature of this house is the two- On the first floor the dining room will open onto this porch and on the second floor a rear bedroom will give on the porch. There is also a smaller porch at the right rear of the smaller opening off the kitchen. A medium size entrance lobby leads from the front of the house into the spacious living room, which runs across the front of the house. To the right of this lobby is located the winding stair- way to the second and third floors. At the front of the house, off a landing two steps above the living room floor, is a cozy cloakroom, where there will be a telephone. The basement of the house will be a model for arrangement, spaciousness of Frank Upman, J. A. Lockie and Horace W. Seventy-five lots were purchased from 60 owners. Several va- cating ordinances had to be pushed |} through the city council. In a model apartment a bride can find instruction in homemaking and a dietary kitchen, and there will be an auditorium for community programs. Newcomb Opens Offices. Nestled Amid Surroundings of Enduring Charm S you follow the short but interesting route to FOXHALL VILLAGE from Dupont Circle—through historic Georgetown via Q St. and west on Reservoir Road past the grounds of stately Georgetown College—you are of necessity impressed with its fortunate loca- tion. Just nine minutes’ drive from Dupont Circle, either in your own car or via the FOXHALL VIL- LAGE bus, the community affords a happy blend- ing of quiet privacy and accessibility. Stores, schools (grade, high and college), and churches are all conveniently at hand, yet unobtrusively removed from the VILLLAGE proper. And, admired by all, the natural beauties of Glover Parkway and Archhold Playground, the second largest of Wash- ington’s natural parks, are immediately at the door of VILLAGE residents. The project of obtaining Foundry Branch Valley south of Reservoir Road to the Potomac River as an addition to these parks is in process of acquirement by the United States Government. And the magnificent estate of Mrs. Anne Archbold, “Hillandale,” at the gateway to FOXHALL, lends a touch of aristocracy to this quaint English colony.
