BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Speclal Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 4.—For a brief period directly after the opening to- day the Stock Market took account of the unexpectedly large increase in the total of brokers' loans revealed in the Stock Exchange compilation made public after the close Tuesday. First prices for most of the leading stocks were lower. Then, when no important liquidation appeared the matter was dismissed from the trading mind and the market started upward again. An elaborate analysis of the market action is necessary. The fact that no attention was paild to the mounting totals of money absorbed in specula- tion is no proof that danger does not exist. It is no proof that the danger is not recognized in high places in| Wall Street. It was simply another | demonstration of a speculative move- | ment going ahead under its own im- | petus. Airplane Stocks Features. The features today were found in the | same groups as on the day before. The | airplane stocks again performed spec- | tacularly. Wright Aeronautical, which | had closed at 132 Tuesday, up 32 points, | forged ahead 9 points more as it/ touched 141. Curtiss Aero advanced | from 85 to above 91. Wright, at these | prices, was at a new record high, and Curtiss was only a point below the rec- | ord made in the preceding session.| There was no fresh news about either. | and every indication was that a small | floating supply, combined with a large | siort interest, was the correct diag- nosis. | Packard was the leader of the auto- | mobile stocks. It had been very strong | in the last hour yesterday, and made a further advance today, establishing a record for the present $10 par shares at | 73. Anaconda was heavily bought and sold at the best since 1920, just be- | low 65. Other copper stocks shared the improvement, more or less promi- | nent among them being Greene Cananea. Stan industrials opened -lower, | but soon made up the loss. General | Motors, General Electric and United | States Steel moved in accord. The most | noteworthy thing was the better (eellnx toward United States Steel. This may | have been a reflection of the intimation at the Bethlehem Steel meeting that | the common stockholders of that cor- | poration might soon receive some re- turn on their investment. Bethlehem Steel itself was strong. Rails Prominent All Day. Rallroad &tocks were prominent all | day. Interest centered about New York, | Chicago & St. Louls at the highest | since 1926, Pittsburgh & West Virginia. up 15 points at 150 added to a 1075~ point rise Tuesday; New York Central, | Reading, Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio and Texas & Pacific. Atchison | responded to the putting of the stock on a regular $10 basis with an addi- tional advance, One discordant note was the weak- ness in United States Rubber, partly a reflection of the situation in the crude rubber market and partly a con- tinuation of the selling that has been coming into this stock for a week or more. ‘The turnover was larger. Whereas the tape had had no difficulty in keep- ing up with business on the floor yes- terday, it lagged behind a quarter of | an_hour todav. } High Low Close | w0 %0 90 | 131120 1295 1034 100 Ope Tide W Of) pf(5) Timken (15) Tobac Prod (m) | Tobac Prod A(T) | Tob Prod efs(A) ; Transcont OIl.
