Br tha Associated Press VALLEYFIELD, bec, March 19.— Efforts to save 20-vear-old Doris Palmer | McDonald from the gallows today had the support of an afidavit by her hus- band, George C. McDonald, declaring her innocent of the murder of the taxi driver for which the two have been sentenced to hang on Friday. McDonald’s affidavit. made in Bor- deaux Jail in Montreal and made pub- lic by his attorney, J. A. Legault, read: “This is to certify that my wife, Doris Palmer McDonald, now in jail in Montreal, is innocent of the murder of A. Bouchard. I swear to this by my God in Heaven. She had not one thing to do in the murder or helped in any way, and the Denver confession is un- true.” The body of Bouchard was found last Summer along a road near the interna- tional border a short time after he had been hired by the McDonalds and a male companion to drive them over the boundary. The McDonalds were arrest- ed in Denver, but the third member of the trio was never arrested. Hopwood, 51, editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, died suddenly at his home last night of a heart attack. Mr, Hopwood had been editor of the Plain Dealer since 1920 and had been jdentified with its editorial staff since 1902. Starting in as a police reporter, he successively became city editor, night editor, managing editor and editor. He had served for several years as president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Mr. Hopwood was born in North Eaton, Ohio. He was educated in Cleve- land, working his way through Adelbert College of Western Reserve University, from which he was graduated in 1901. Besides his widow, two daughters and & son survive.
