PLANS ARE IMPORTANT IN HOUSE CONSTRUCTION Definition of Terms Used in Draw-| | ings Aids in Understanding | Them. | Pians, however perfectly or imper- fectly made, are the chief reliance of the owner and the contractor in vi: ualizing the house to be built, upon their quality and correct reading | depend to a large extent the ultimate | satisfaction in a particular home. The | plans should incorporate all the main features of the home, and well drawn plans should planily show these in such 8 way that their functions and ultimate worth are made perfectly plain. In order to properly understand the lans certain principles must be kept mind. A plan is a horizontal sec- tion cut through the walls of the house | above the window sills. All walls and rtitions are cut through with open- g marking locations of doors and windows. An elevation is a projection drawing of one side of the house showing all details which appear on that side in true dimension. Plans and elevations are drawn to scale, usually with one-fourth inch on | the drawing equaling one foot on the compieted house. Symbols tell much of the story on, plans. Different materials such as | i brick, stone and concrete are shown in | different ways. | . Special symbols locate electric and ! ®as outlets, Notations on plans and | elevations explain materials to be used. Door swings are shown and sizes indi- cated. Size of floor beams and direc- %on of their span are usually marked. ‘The Yukon River is navigable for || large steamers up to Whitehorse, | Canada, a distance of 2,000 miles, i Exhibition home at 752 Morningside drive, Shepherd Park, which has been | purchased from L. Estimated costs for installing hot- water heating systems often Vary over wide limits. The home owner should realize that when all is sald and done that which he is seeking is “heat.” 1t proposals are obtained from sev- | eral heating contractors it behooves the owner to be sure that he will not be sorry that he selected the lowest bid. The lowest first price is apt to be the least attractive when all the facts are | known. Remember always that ultl- mate aim and desire is for “heat.” Re- member also that the heating plant is paid for only once. Fuel bills for oper- ating it are a continuing expense. An | apparent saving on first cost may mean excessive operating cost. Matter of Temperature. 1t is possible to maintain a tempera- | ture of 70 degrees in a residence with a plant 15 per cent smaller in capacity than should have been installed. To | do =0, however, requires large fuel con- high flue temperatures with | chimney losses, frequent at-| tendance to the fire and general in- creased deterioration to the plant. It is better to spend enough money for an adequate and suitable heating plant than to contract for a cheap plant and pay for such shortsightedness dur- ing its entire life. ‘Two or more heating contractors will seldom present bids for a heating plant for a residence that are comparable unless they are given the same blue- prints and specifications on which to bid. It is in the owner's interest to supply such plans and specifications and no proposal should be accepted which does not clearly set forth in de. tail the work that is to be done. Mistakes Seen Too Late. Proper Treatment Needful in Good Architectural Design. | Good architectural design, which most planners agree is only arrived at by the full utilization of structural | parts of the house for decorative pur- poses, involves proper placement and proportioning of the chimnev, which may be made an important contribut- design. The chimney may contrast in mate- rial with other features of the house, but should always harmonize in form. Definite styles of chimneys have de- veloped concurrently with™ the various architecture English architecture probably makes || more complete use of the decorative qualities of the chimney' than any other.
