He was burned at the stake at Vienna, Austria, March 10, 1528, because of his devotion to and propagation of his evangelical faith. Huebmaler was the only one of the great Jeaders of the reformation who died a mar- tyr's death, Luther and Calvin hav- ing dled in their beds and Zwingli having fallen in battle. Huebmaler, one of the most. schol- arly and cuitured men of his day, was baptized in April, 1525, and be- came a flaming evangelist. Follow- ing his baptism of 400 converts in 10 days, the state authorities im- risoned him at Vienna and later d him at the stake after his conviction for heresy. His wife was also & martyr and was drowned in the Danube River at Vienna three days after the death of her husband.
