VIOLENT ADVANGE ON STOCK MARKET General Motors Again Leader—Trade Is on Enormous Scale. Is BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. . NEW YORK, March 9.—Wall street today greeted the announcement of an unexpected decrease in brokers' loans, made after the close yesterday, with a violent advance on the Exchange. For, the first two hours the market fairly boiled as shorts and new buyers com- peted in the bidding up of prices. General Motors was again the all- influential leader. Closing at 150} terday, the opening sale today was 2,000 shares at 15z, a new high for all time, from which the price quotation rose spasmodically to atove 156. eck al today the high price for General Mo tors was 139';. In other words, in six business days there lm:‘ lbcc:‘ r‘n l'::sl :}E t 17 points, an achieve: I.tln:vo:uld bgonard to match for a stock of that caiiber in recent times. Transactions Enormous. Transactions were on an enormous scale, not only in General Motors, but in all the other industrial favorites. U. S. Steel started in on a block of 2400 shares at an advance of over 2!z points and held this gain remarkably well. There was a long list of new 1928 highs, including several of the in- depsndent motors and such typical in- | dustrials as American Can, Corn Prod- | ucts and Paramount Famous. Of course, there were realizing sales, un- der the weight of which, part of t‘he“ gain was suostantially lost, but it was, a market in which the buyers had all the best of it. A new explanation came to life to-| day for the sudden strength in General Motors. It was the semi-official an- nouncement that the Managers' Securi- ties Co.. owned by executives and of- ficials of General Motors, had pur- chased some 200,000 shares of the com- mon stock at a toial cost of about $30,000,000, all of which.
