RPAL SALE SIGNS HIT INBEAUTY DRIVE Real Estate Board Asks Members to Eliminate Needless Display. ESTATE. hoped may be withdrawn from the pudlic view.” Mr. Miller further believes that co- operation among - brokers and owners limiting the display to but one sign on each plece of property would be a long step in the right direction. The law itself permits three signs in each prop- erty and there is no rule of the local board which prevents the placing of a less number of signs than that per- mitted by law. Mr. Miller's letter there- fore is in the nature of a suggestion and a request for co-operation along this line. “Our local community takes pride in the fact that Washington is designated By eminent authorities as the most beautiful city in America, yet the same authorities indicate it is only 25 per cent beautiful, leaving much to be ac- complished. Certainly the elimination of undesirable and unnecessary out- door advertising in the community would make for a cleaner appearing city.” Limitation of the number of “For Sale” signs naw posted on property in the District as & means of preserving to a greater degree the beauty of the sakiierniyy Real Estate Board, in a personal letter REBU'LT ]N FOUR YEARS | More THE EVENING HOME HEATING ADVICE BY ARA MARCUS DANIELS Conaulting and Advisory Engincer. Determining Humidity in the Home. It is not believed that any investiga- tions have proved definitely what are the best conditions as to temperature for our dwelling Seventy ~degrees Fahrenheit is generally taken as the standard temperature for living and other rooms in which the occupants are inactive, excepting sleeping rooms. is believed that for this temperature & humidity between 35 and 45 per cent should be maintained. It should not be less than 30 per cent, whereas it is probable were the humidity in our houses tested. it would be found usual- 1y to be 20 per cent or low ‘That is as dry as desert air, and predisposes persons that breathe it to throat and nose irritations. The dryer the air, the more difficult it is to heat a house with it. The moisture in the air carries and retains heat. In cold weather, a consid- erable quantity of mofsture is required if proper humidity is to be maintained. Consider an average-sized house con- taining a family of five persons. Each person requires 1,800 cubic feet of air per hour; so 9.000 cubic feet (5x-1.800) STAR, WASHINGTON, every hour. Cracks around windows and doors or the opening of doors and windows are usually depended upon to supply the needed air where a steam or hot-water system is installed. If a warm-air pipe furnace is used, the fresh-air duct will take care of it. If air at 0° temperature and 70 ‘Yer cent relative humidity is introduced into a house and heated to 70°F. and during the temperature rise no molisture is added, the relative humidity will de- crease 65.91 per cent to 4.09 per cent. That is entirely too low. Assume that the temperature is to be maintained at 70°F. and the relative humidity at 40 per cent, which is not too high. In order that those values be kept for 9,000 cubic feet per hour, Y| there would be required an evaporation every hour of almost one-half gallon of water. Not many existing plants are capable of approximating that quantity. A rought practical test for determin- ing whether the air in a room Is too dry is to observe the inside of windows on a cold day. If frost forms freely on the inside of the glass, there is no doubt but that the inside air has suf- ficlent humidity. If there is no sign of frost the air is likely too dry.
