14 = FIN — ANCIALS THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. €. WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 14, 1927, FINANCIAL. FYICES GO HIHER INCOTION MARKET Lint Consumption Figures Give Staple Boost in Today’s Trading. By. the Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 14.—The cotton market opened firm today at an advance of 27 to 34 points, active months quickly showing net gains of 34 to 37 points on brisk buying stimu- lated by realatively firm cables and unexpectedly large figures on the con- sumption of lint cotton in this coun- try for November. The advance to 18.50 for January and 18.88 for May met a good denl of realizing and much Southern sell- ing, however, and prices eased off 20 or 25 points from the best before the end of the first hour. The report of the Census Bure showed domestic consumption of 62 680 bales for November, compar with 612,935 for October, and 58: for November last year. The volume of business tapered off somewhat later in the morning but there was further buying on the bull- ish view of the domestic consumption figures. Talk of a slightly better spot demand was sufficient to absorb of- ferings. After selling off to 18.27, or within 9 points of vester clos- ing quotations for Janua: deliveries, the market rallied a few points, with the active months showing net ad- vances of about 15 to 16 points at midday. 1. Potomac Electric Power 6 per cent preferred was strong at 112 and the 5% per cent issue equally firm at 106%. The directors of the Woodridge- Langdon Savings & Commercial Bank yesterday declared the regular semi- annual dividend of 3 per cent, pay- able on January 15, to stockholders of record December 31. The directors also voted to transfer $2,500 from the undivided-profits account to surplus, bringing the total of the bank’s surplus to $42,500. In addition to the passage of these resolutions the di- rectors voted a half month’s salary to all members of the staff. In submitting his report, A. S. Hen- derson, president of the institution, expressed gratification over the sub- stantial supportw hich the bank has received from the residents of Wood- ridge and contiguous territory since the organization of the bank five years ago, pointing to the fact that their co-operatiori has enabled the bank ‘to acquire resources of over $550,000. Barber & Ross Dividend Voted. At a meeting of the board of direc- tors of Barber & Ross yesterday after- {noon the regular quarterly dividend of 87% cents per share was declared on the common stock. This is the fourth dividend on common since the present corporation was organized a year ago and is payable on January 1 to stockholders of record on Decem- ber 20. Steady improvement in the hard- ware business all over the country, which is being reflected in Washing- ton, was reported at the meeting. The common stock on which the dividend was declared is listed on the local stock exchange, the last sale being made at 35. Federal Storage Disbursement. The directors of the Federal Storage Co. met yesterday afternoon and de- clared the regular quarterly dividend of 2 per cent on the company’s pre- ferred stock. Tt is payable on January 16 to stockholders of record at the close of business on December 31, ac- cording to announcement today by President E. K. Morris. Declares Dividend and Bonus, The directors of the Security Sav- ings & Commercial Bank at a meet- ing this forenoon declared the regular quarterly dividend of 4 per cent due at this time. The dividend is payable {on December 31 to stockholders of record December 24. The board also voted a Christmas bonus to all employes of the bank of 5 per cent based on the past year's salaries. This is one of the first Yule- tide gifts to be ordered by any Wasl ington bank and will cause great jay. Plow Funds Back Into Savings. Members of last year's Christmas savings clubs are displaying a sur- prising degree of thrift in connection with their plans for 1928, one local bank reporting chat 40 per cent of the money saved during 1927 has al- ready been placed in the bank for 1928, Part of this money has been placed in the 1928 Christmas Savings Club and the remainder in permanent savings. Last year it was estimated by the Christmas Savings Club committee of the District Bankers' Association that 28 per cent was re-invested. Indica- tions point to a still better record this year. Information harvested in the finaneial district shows that many members have put half of their 1927 savings back in for 1928. Of course, such a high percentage will not hold for the general run of club members, but it reveals ;1 decidedly thrifty trend. Out of the $6 000,000 saved in W ington it looks as if about $2,000,000 of it might go tack into the banks. The other $4,000,000 is finding its way into the stores and being used to meet a wide variety of otner tinancial obligations. Financial Notes. The annual meeting and educational sessions of the Stable Money Asso- ciation will be held at Hotel Washing- ton, December 27-30. The aims of the organization are to promote stabiliza- tion of the purchasing power of money. The First National Bank of West New York declared a Christmas bonus of 100 per cent in salary to all who had been with the institution a year or more. Stockholders of the Pennsylvania Railroad showed gain of 235 during November, bringing total on Decem- ber 1 to 142,512, compared with 142,- 277 on November 1 and 140,379 on De cember 1, 19! Steel Strong Feature. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Dispatch to The Star. W YORK, December stock market left off today mixed price changes. Realizing sales, heavy at times, in some stocks were balanced by further advances in others. First the buying would pre- dominate and then the selling and it was never sure for long at a time which was the stronger. Steel, touching 148, was higher than at any time since ober 14. Free- port Texas was another strong fe: ture. The rails sagged toward the close and there were rapid and wild fluctuations in the airplane stocks. General Motors ruled lower. There was a brief flurry in New York Central, following the announce- ment that the Michigan Central, a 99- per-cent owned gubsidiary, had de- clared an extra ° >r cent cash divi- dend in addition to the regular 20 per cent semi-annual disbursement. It has long heen recognized that the New York Central could ftake larger divi- dends trom its subsidiaries whenever it saw fit, arly every group had at least one outstandingly strong stock. In the rails it was New Haven. In the steels it was Bethlehem. In the coppers it was Calumet & Arizona. In the utilities it was Philadelphia Co. There were, however, weak spots. One of them was American Linseed. Anoth- er was Porto Rican American To- ~ Then there was a which simply long li: of marked time. News Developments Scanty. News developments were scanty. Money renewed at 4 per cent, un. changed, and seemed to be in good | supply. Steel operators were declared to have been stepped up, the Steel | Corporation ftself running at about ! 651 per cent of capacity, against 63 | per cent in the preceding week, which was the low record for the year. The independent steel producers were at 62 per cent of capacity, against 60 | per cent a week ago. | Bethlehem Steel was in urgent de- mand, crossing 59, where it was up over 3 points on thed ay. The buying seemed to be too confident to | have come entirely from a short in- | terest. It looked as if something spe- | cial was in the making. While Beth. | lehem was advancing so easily, United | was_selling fractionally lower. Colarado Fuel and Vanadium | \vere higher, but the other steels did ittle. The demonstration in New Haven paralleled that in Bethlehem Steel. It carried the stock above 59 to the high- est since 1916. Here the talk was of dividend action some time next vear. Estimates now are that the road will earn nearly $5.50 on the common stock in 1927. Canadian Pacific and St. Louis Southwestern were other strong rails. The first named, however, did not hold all its gain. Calumet and Arizona Up. Calumet and Arizona was bid up 107 which was the highest | since it was listed on the New York | Stock Exchange. It has established | a better price than this on the Boston Exchange in 1909. Illustrating the ir- | regularity that prevailed, Greene Can- | anea was the object of realizing sales | while Calumet and Arizona was going ! up. Park Utah was the active low- priced copper stock, ~Philadelphia Co. soared 7 points, selling just below 150, the highest for all time. The floating supply is so small that wide moves are the regular thing in this stock. | While these advances were being| recorded sharp reactions took plac: elsewhere. Porto Rican-American To- baceo, class “B,” slumped nearly 9| points. and then recovered a good | share of the loss. American Steel | Foundries, which had been bid up so | rapidly earlier in the week, came down over 3 points. American Linseed w in supply. Woolworth was lower Gold Dust lost ground. So did tobacco products, Goodrich, Texas Gulf Sul- phur and many other less active is- sues. As a rule, the losses were not as large as the gains. CONTINENTAL BAKING. NEW YORK, December 14 (#).— Directors of the Continental Baking Corporation have declared a quarterly dividend of $1 per share on class “A” common stock and a regular quarter- | ly disbursement of 2 per cent on the | company's 8 per cent preferred stock. Both dividends are payable January | 3 to stockholders of record December | 23. George K. Morrow was clected | to the board of directors to replace | Elmer L. Cline, resigned. —_— Halsey, Stuart & Co. and Graham, Parsons & Co., offer today $2,500,000 Paramount Theaters (allied owners’ corporation, a wholly owned subsid- lary of realty associates, New York) serial 6 per cent debentures due Jan- uary 1, 1931 to 1941, inclusive, and é)rlced to yleld from 6.10 to 6.50 per ent. stocks Vietor pr pf (7).
